In 2021, after five years of growth, there was significant decline in the Indonesian date market, when its value decreased by -13.5% to $X. Overall, consumption, however, showed a prominent increase. Date consumption peaked at $X in 2020, and then shrank in the following year.

Malaysia (X tons), Bangladesh (X tons) and Taiwan (Chinese) (X tons) were the main destinations of date exports from Indonesia, together comprising 93% of total exports.

The export price peaked in 2021 and is likely to continue growth in years to come.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major external markets. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Bangladesh ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Malaysia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Taiwan (Chinese) (+18.5%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Indonesia

Date imports into Indonesia dropped slightly to X tons in 2021, falling by -4.4% against 2020. In general, imports, however, saw resilient growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when imports increased by 71%. Imports peaked at X tons in 2020, and then fell modestly in the following year.

In value terms, date imports reduced markedly to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, continue to indicate a remarkable increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when imports increased by 56% against the previous year. Imports peaked at $X in 2020, and then declined remarkably in the following year.

Egypt (X tons), Saudi Arabia (X tons) and the United Arab Emirates (X tons) were the main suppliers of date imports to Indonesia, together comprising 81% of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by Saudi Arabia (with a CAGR of +73.2%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest date suppliers to Indonesia were Egypt ($X), Saudi Arabia ($X) and Tunisia ($X), together comprising 69% of total imports.

Saudi Arabia, with a CAGR of +68.5%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, among the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The average date import price stood at $X per ton in 2021, declining by -11.3% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2021, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.9%. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 an increase of 29% against the previous year. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2020 to 2021, the average import prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was Tunisia ($X per ton), while the price for Saudi Arabia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the United Arab Emirates (+4.5%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
