Alumina Market Size in Indonesia

In 2020, the Indonesian alumina market decreased by -X% to $X, falling for the second year in a row after five years of growth. In general, consumption, however, saw a temperate expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when the market value increased by X% against the previous year. As a result, consumption reached the peak level of $X. from 2019 to 2020, the growth of the market remained at a lower figure.

Alumina Production in Indonesia

In value terms, alumina production contracted sharply to $X in 2020 estimated in export prices. Overall, production, however, continues to indicate significant growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 when the production volume increased by X% against the previous year. Alumina production peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2020, production remained at a lower figure.

In 2020, approx. X tonnes of alumina were exported from Indonesia; which is down by -X% against the year before. Overall, exports, however, recorded a significant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when exports increased by X% y-o-y. Exports peaked at X tonnes in 2019, and then plummeted in the following year.

In value terms, alumina exports contracted significantly to $X in 2020. In general, exports, however, showed a strong increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 when exports increased by X% year-to-year. Over the period under review, exports attained the peak figure at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2020, exports failed to regain the momentum.

India (X tonnes), Malaysia (X tonnes) and China (X tonnes) were the main destinations of alumina exports from Indonesia, with a combined X% share of total exports.

From 2007 to 2020, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by China (+X% per year), while exports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, India ($X), Malaysia ($X) and China ($X) appeared to be the largest markets for alumina exported from Indonesia worldwide, together accounting for X% of total exports.

Among the main countries of destination, China (+X% per year) recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The average alumina export price stood at $X per tonne in 2020, falling by -X% against the previous year. In general, the export price saw a abrupt shrinkage. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 an increase of X% y-o-y. The export price peaked at $X per tonne in 2007; however, from 2008 to 2020, export prices remained at a lower figure.

Average prices varied noticeably for the major overseas markets. In 2020, the country with the highest price was China ($X per tonne), while the average price for exports to India ($X per tonne) was amongst the lowest.

From 2007 to 2020, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to India, while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.

Imports into Indonesia

In 2020, the amount of alumina imported into Indonesia dropped to X tonnes, which is down by -X% on 2019. Over the period under review, imports recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2012 when imports increased by X% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at X tonnes in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2020, imports failed to regain the momentum.

In value terms, alumina imports reduced notably to $X in 2020. In general, imports saw a noticeable shrinkage. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when imports increased by X% year-to-year. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. from 2019 to 2020, the growth imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2020, Australia (X tonnes) was the main supplier of alumina to Indonesia, with a X% share of total imports. Moreover, alumina imports from Australia exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, India (X tonnes), more than tenfold. China (X tonnes) ranked third in terms of total imports with a X% share.

From 2007 to 2020, the average annual growth rate of volume from Australia was relatively modest. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: India (+X% per year) and China (+X% per year).
