Snail Market Size in India

In 2020, after two years of growth, there was significant decline in the Indian snail market, when its value decreased by -X% to $X. In general, consumption faced a deep contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2010 when the market value increased by X% against the previous year. Snail consumption peaked at $X in 2019, and then fell remarkably in the following year.

In value terms, snail exports soared to $X in 2020. Over the period under review, exports continue to indicate significant growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2009 with an increase of X% against the previous year. Exports peaked at $X in 2011; however, from 2012 to 2020, exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

Thailand (X tonnes) was the main destination for snail exports from India, accounting for a X% share of total exports. Moreover, snail exports to Thailand exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Hong Kong SAR (X tonnes), twofold.

From 2007 to 2020, the average annual growth rate of volume to Thailand amounted to +X%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Hong Kong SAR (+X% per year) and China (+X% per year).

In value terms, Thailand ($X), Hong Kong SAR ($X) and China ($X) were the largest markets for snail exported from India worldwide, together comprising X% of total exports.

Among the main countries of destination, Thailand saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The average snail export price stood at $X per tonne in 2020, declining by -X% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2010 an increase of X% y-o-y. Over the period under review, average export prices reached the maximum at $X per tonne in 2011; however, from 2012 to 2020, export prices failed to regain the momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major external markets. In 2020, the country with the highest price was Hong Kong SAR ($X per tonne), while the average price for exports to Thailand ($X per tonne) was amongst the lowest.

From 2007 to 2020, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to China, while the prices for the other major destinations experienced mixed trend patterns.

In 2020, the amount of snails (except sea snails) imported into India surged to X kg, increasing by X% compared with 2019. In general, imports, however, recorded a pronounced descent. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X kg in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2020, imports failed to regain the momentum.

In value terms, snail imports surged to $X in 2020. Overall, imports, however, continue to indicate a remarkable increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when imports increased by X% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. from 2018 to 2020, the growth imports failed to regain the momentum.
