Pistachio Market Size in India

In 2020, after three years of growth, there was decline in the Indian pistachio market, when its value decreased by -X% to $X. Overall, consumption continues to indicate a strong expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2012 when the market value increased by X% y-o-y. Over the period under review, the market reached the peak level at $X in 2019, and then dropped in the following year.

Exports from India

In 2020, overseas shipments of pistachios increased by X% to X tonnes, rising for the third year in a row after two years of decline. Over the period under review, exports recorded prominent growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2008 with an increase of X% against the previous year. Exports peaked at X tonnes in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2020, exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, pistachio exports soared to $X in 2020. Overall, exports continue to indicate prominent growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2008 when exports increased by X% against the previous year. Exports peaked at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2020, exports failed to regain the momentum.

Exports by Country

Russia (X tonnes) was the main destination for pistachio exports from India, with a X% share of total exports. Moreover, pistachio exports to Russia exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Sri Lanka (X tonnes), twofold. The United Arab Emirates (X tonnes) ranked third in terms of total exports with a X% share.

From 2007 to 2020, the average annual growth rate of volume to Russia was relatively modest. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Sri Lanka (+X% per year) and the United Arab Emirates (+X% per year).

In value terms, Russia ($X), Sri Lanka ($X) and the United Arab Emirates ($X) appeared to be the largest markets for pistachio exported from India worldwide, together accounting for X% of total exports.

Sri Lanka (+X% per year) saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, among the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

In 2020, the average pistachio export price amounted to $X per tonne, with an increase of X% against the previous year. In general, the export price saw buoyant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2010 when the average export price increased by X% y-o-y. The export price peaked at $X per tonne in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2020, export prices failed to regain the momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major export markets. In 2020, the country with the highest price was Sri Lanka ($X per tonne), while the average price for exports to Bangladesh ($X per tonne) was amongst the lowest.

From 2007 to 2020, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Nepal, while the prices for the other major destinations experienced mixed trend patterns.

Imports into India

In 2020, supplies from abroad of pistachios increased by X% to X tonnes, rising for the fourth consecutive year after two years of decline. Overall, imports enjoyed resilient growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2012 with an increase of X% year-to-year. Imports peaked in 2020 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.

In value terms, pistachio imports contracted modestly to $X in 2020. In general, imports continue to indicate a resilient increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2012 when imports increased by X% year-to-year. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at $X in 2019, and then shrank slightly in the following year.

Imports by Country

In 2020, the United Arab Emirates (X tonnes) constituted the largest supplier of pistachio to India, with a X% share of total imports. Moreover, pistachio imports from the United Arab Emirates exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Iran (X tonnes), threefold. The U.S. (X tonnes) ranked third in terms of total imports with a X% share.

From 2007 to 2020, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from the United Arab Emirates amounted to +X%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Iran (+X% per year) and the U.S. (+X% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The average pistachio import price stood at $X per tonne in 2020, dropping by -X% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import price indicated notable growth from 2007 to 2020: its price increased at an average annual rate of +X% over the last thirteen-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2020 figures, pistachio import price decreased by -X% against 2017 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when the average import price increased by X% y-o-y. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per tonne. from 2016 to 2020, the growth in terms of the average import prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2020, the country with the highest price was Afghanistan ($X per tonne), while the price for the United Arab Emirates ($X per tonne) was amongst the lowest.
