Melon Market Size in India

For the eighth year in a row, the Indian melon market recorded growth in sales value, which increased by X% to $X in 2019. Over the period under review, consumption showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when the market value increased by X% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the market reached the peak level at $X in 2007; however, from 2008 to 2019, consumption failed to regain the momentum.

In value terms, melon production soared to $X in 2019 estimated in export prices. In general, production recorded a perceptible decrease. Melon exports from India reduced notably to X tonnes in 2019, shrinking by -X% compared with the previous year. In general, exports, however, posted a remarkable increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 with an increase of X% year-to-year. Over the period under review, exports attained the peak figure at X tonnes in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2019, exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, melon exports reduced modestly to $X in 2019. Over the period under review, exports, however, saw significant growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2008 when exports increased by X% against the previous year. Over the period under review, exports attained the maximum at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2019, exports failed to regain the momentum.

Exports by Country

The United Arab Emirates (X tonnes) was the main destination for melon exports from India, accounting for a X% share of total exports. Moreover, melon exports to the United Arab Emirates exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Oman (X tonnes), eightfold. The third position in this ranking was occupied by Bahrain (X tonnes), with a X% share.

From 2007 to 2019, the average annual growth rate of volume to the United Arab Emirates totaled +X%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Oman (+X% per year) and Bahrain (+X% per year).

In value terms, the United Arab Emirates ($X) remains the key foreign market for melon exports from India, comprising X% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was occupied by the Netherlands ($X), with a X% share of total exports. It was followed by Oman, with a X% share.

The average melon export price stood at $X per tonne in 2019, surging by X% against the previous year. Overall, export price indicated a remarkable increase from 2007 to 2019: its price increased at an average annual rate of +X% over the last twelve-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2019 figures, melon export price decreased by -X% against 2017 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2008 when the average export price increased by X% y-o-y. Over the period under review, average export prices hit record highs at $X per tonne in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2019, export prices failed to regain the momentum.

Imports into India

In 2019, supplies from abroad of melons decreased by -X% to X tonnes, falling for the tenth consecutive year after three years of growth. In general, imports, however, saw buoyant growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2009 with an increase of X% y-o-y. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tonnes. From 2010 to 2019, the growth imports failed to regain the momentum.

In value terms, melon imports contracted to $X in 2019. Over the period under review, imports, however, recorded a resilient increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2009 when imports increased by X% year-to-year. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2010 to 2019, the growth imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

Afghanistan (X tonnes), Thailand (X tonnes) and Pakistan (X tonnes) were the main suppliers of melon imports to India, with a combined X% share of total imports. The United Arab Emirates and the U.S. lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further X 2007 to 2019, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by the United Arab Emirates (+X% per year), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
