In 2021, shipments abroad of hormones, prostaglandins, thromboxanes and leukotrienes was finally on the rise to reach X tons for the first time since 2017, thus ending a three-year declining trend. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at X tons in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, hormones, prostaglandins, thromboxanes and leukotrienes exports expanded modestly to $X in 2021. In general, exports recorded a prominent expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 44%. The exports peaked in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.
Exports by Country
Belgium (X tons) was the main destination for hormones, prostaglandins, thromboxanes and leukotrienes exports from India, with a 20% share of total exports. Moreover, hormones, prostaglandins, thromboxanes and leukotrienes exports to Belgium exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Ireland (X tons), threefold. The third position in this ranking was taken by the Netherlands (X tons), with a 5.7% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume to Belgium amounted to +59.9%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Ireland (+132.9% per year) and the Netherlands (+36.2% per year).
In value terms, the largest markets for hormones, prostaglandins, thromboxanes and leukotrienes exported from India were the United States ($X), the Netherlands ($X) and Ireland ($X), together comprising 28% of total exports.
In terms of the main countries of destination, Ireland, with a CAGR of +145.4%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
In 2021, the average export price for hormones, prostaglandins, thromboxanes and leukotrienes amounted to $X per kg, which is down by -6.5% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, recorded buoyant growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when the average export price increased by 84%. The export price peaked at $X per kg in 2020, and then fell in the following year.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major foreign markets. In 2021, the country with the highest price was the United States ($X per kg), while the average price for exports to Belgium ($X per kg) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Pakistan (+38.5%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
Imports of Hormones, Prostaglandins, Thromboxanes And Leukotrienes
Imports into India
In 2021, hormones, prostaglandins, thromboxanes and leukotrienes imports into India skyrocketed to X tons, picking up by 30% against 2020. Over the period under review, imports enjoyed a prominent expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 53% against the previous year. Imports peaked in 2021 and are likely to see steady growth in years to come.
In value terms, hormones, prostaglandins, thromboxanes and leukotrienes imports rose significantly to $X in 2021. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +5.2% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when imports increased by 31%. Imports peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

In 2021, China (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of hormones, prostaglandins, thromboxanes and leukotrienes to India, accounting for a 87% share of total imports. Moreover, hormones, prostaglandins, thromboxanes and leukotrienes imports from China exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, the United States (X tons), more than tenfold. The third position in this ranking was held by Spain (X tons), with a 1.7% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from China amounted to +16.8%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: the United States (+2.7% per year) and Spain (+9.4% per year).
In value terms, China ($X) constituted the largest supplier of hormones, prostaglandins, thromboxanes and leukotrienes to India, comprising 57% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Italy ($X), with an 8.8% share of total imports. It was followed by Germany, with a 4.1% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from China stood at +7.2%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Italy (+11.4% per year) and Germany (+1.4% per year).
Import Prices by Country
The average import price for hormones, prostaglandins, thromboxanes and leukotrienes stood at $X per ton in 2021, which is down by -18% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price recorded a drastic downturn. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when the average import price increased by 56%. Over the period under review, average import prices reached the maximum at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was the Netherlands ($X per ton), while the price for China ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
