The Indian bleached sulphate pulp market was finally on the rise to reach $X in 2021, after three years of decline. Overall, consumption posted measured growth. Bleached sulphate pulp consumption peaked at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, consumption remained at a lower figure.

Bleached Sulphate Pulp Exports

Exports from India

In 2021, overseas shipments of bleached sulphate pulp decreased by -31.5% to X tons, falling for the second year in a row after two years of growth. In general, exports continue to indicate a deep setback. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 when exports increased by 129% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons. From 2017 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, bleached sulphate pulp exports dropped to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports saw a deep setback. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 with an increase of 131% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2017 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

Rwanda (X tons), Vietnam (X tons) and Nepal (X tons) were the main destinations of bleached sulphate pulp exports from India, together comprising 75% of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Rwanda (with a CAGR of +486.8%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Rwanda ($X), Vietnam ($X) and Nepal ($X) appeared to be the largest markets for bleached sulphate pulp exported from India worldwide, together accounting for 76% of total exports.

In terms of the main countries of destination, Rwanda, with a CAGR of +415.4%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

The average bleached sulphate pulp export price stood at $X per ton in 2021, surging by 33% against the previous year. In general, the export price continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 an increase of 55%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2018 to 2021, the average export prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably country of destination: the country with the highest price was Rwanda ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Nepal ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to South Korea (+5.5%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced mixed trend patterns.

Imports into India

In 2021, approx. X tons of bleached sulphate pulp were imported into India; increasing by 1.7% compared with 2020. Over the period under review, imports continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 when imports increased by 10% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2017 to 2021, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, bleached sulphate pulp imports soared to $X in 2021. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +2.3% over the period from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Imports peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

The United States (X tons), Indonesia (X tons) and Chile (X tons) were the main suppliers of bleached sulphate pulp imports to India, with a combined 66% share of total imports. These countries were followed by Canada, Singapore, Austria, Sweden, New Zealand, Finland, Malaysia and Estonia, which together accounted for a further 27%.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Singapore (with a CAGR of +43.4%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the United States ($X), Indonesia ($X) and Chile ($X) constituted the largest bleached sulphate pulp suppliers to India, together comprising 68% of total imports. Canada, Singapore, Sweden, Austria, New Zealand, Finland, Malaysia and Estonia lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 24%.

Singapore, with a CAGR of +43.3%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, among the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2021, the average bleached sulphate pulp import price amounted to $X per ton, rising by 32% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2021, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.7%. The import price peaked at $X per ton in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was the United States ($X per ton), while the price for Estonia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Sweden (+2.9%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
