Pulses Market Size in Hungary

The revenue of the pulses market in Hungary amounted to $X in 2018, shrinking by -X% against the previous year. Over the period under review, pulses consumption continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2010 when the market value increased by X% y-o-y. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2011 with an increase of X% y-o-y. Pulses production peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2018, production failed to regain its momentum.

Average yield of pulses in Hungary totaled X tonne per ha in 2018, remaining stable against the previous year. Over the period under review, the pulses yield continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2010 with an increase of X% year-to-year. Over the period under review, the average pulses yield attained its peak figure level at X tonne per ha in 2007; however, from 2008 to 2018, yield remained at a lower figure. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

In 2018, the total area harvested in terms of pulses production in Hungary stood at X ha, declining by -X% against the previous year. Overall, the pulses harvested area continues to indicate a mild drop. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 with an increase of X% y-o-y. In that year, the pulses harvested area reached its peak level of X ha. From 2016 to 2018, the growth of the pulses harvested area failed to regain its momentum.

Exports from Hungary

In 2018, the amount of pulses exported from Hungary totaled X tonnes, stabilizing at the previous year. Over the period under review, pulses exports, however, continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2011 when exports increased by X% year-to-year. Exports peaked at X tonnes in 2017, leveling off in the following year.

In value terms, pulses exports totaled $X in 2018. In general, pulses exports, however, continue to indicate buoyant growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2011 when exports increased by X% y-o-y. Over the period under review, pulses exports attained their maximum at $X in 2017, and then declined slightly in the following year.

Exports by Country

Italy (X tonnes) was the main destination for pulses exports from Hungary, accounting for a X% share of total exports. Moreover, pulses exports to Italy exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, France (X tonnes), twofold. Spain (X tonnes) ranked third in terms of total exports with a X% share.

From 2007 to 2018, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Italy was relatively modest. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: France (+X% per year) and Spain (+X% per year).

In value terms, the largest markets for pulses exported from Hungary were Italy ($X), Spain ($X) and Russia ($X), together accounting for X% of total exports. These countries were followed by Moldova, the U.S., Pakistan, the UK, Poland, France, Turkey, Morocco and Romania, which together accounted for a further X UK experienced the highest rates of growth with regard to exports, among the main countries of destination over the last eleven years, while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

The average pulses export price stood at $X per tonne in 2018, dropping by -X% against the previous year. In general, the export price indicated a pronounced expansion from 2007 to 2018: its price increased at an average annual rate of +X% over the last eleven-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2018 figures, pulses export price decreased by -X% against 2014 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2009 when the average export price increased by X% year-to-year. The export price peaked at $X per tonne in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2018, export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major foreign markets. In 2018, the country with the highest price was Moldova ($X per tonne), while the average price for exports to France ($X per tonne) was amongst the lowest.

From 2007 to 2018, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Romania, while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Pulses Imports

Imports into Hungary

In 2018, approx. X tonnes of pulses were imported into Hungary; declining by -X% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the total imports indicated resilient growth from 2007 to 2018: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +X% over the last eleven years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2018 figures, pulses imports increased by +X% against 2011 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when imports increased by X% y-o-y. Over the period under review, pulses imports attained their peak figure at X tonnes in 2017, and then declined slightly in the following year.

The U.S. (X tonnes), Canada (X tonnes) and Slovakia (X tonnes) were the main suppliers of pulses imports to Hungary, together comprising X% of total imports. These countries were followed by France, Ukraine, Poland, Germany and the Czech Republic, which together accounted for a further X 2007 to 2018, the most notable rate of growth in terms of imports, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by Ukraine, while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the U.S. ($X) constituted the largest supplier of pulses to Hungary, comprising X% of total pulses imports. The second position in the ranking was occupied by Canada ($X), with a X% share of total imports. It was followed by Germany, with a X% share.

From 2007 to 2018, the average annual growth rate of value from the U.S. stood at -X%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Canada (-X% per year) and Germany (+X% per year).

In 2018, the average pulses import price amounted to $X per tonne, going up by X% against the previous year. Over the last eleven years, it increased at an average annual rate of +X%. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2010 when the average import price increased by X% year-to-year. The import price peaked at $X per tonne in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2018, import prices failed to regain their momentum.
