Exports from Hungary

In 2021, the amount of frozen potatoes prepared or preserved exported from Hungary soared to X tons, jumping by 147% against 2020. Over the period under review, total exports indicated a buoyant increase from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +6.5% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, the exports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, preserved frozen potato exports surged to $X in 2021. Overall, exports enjoyed a resilient increase. As a result, the exports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Exports by Country

Romania (X tons), Slovakia (X tons) and Austria (X tons) were the main destinations of preserved frozen potato exports from Hungary, together comprising 81% of total exports. Croatia, Bulgaria and Slovenia lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 16%.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Bulgaria (with a CAGR of +3,789.7%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Romania ($X) remains the key foreign market for frozen potatoes prepared or preserved exports from Hungary, comprising 44% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Slovakia ($X), with a 22% share of total exports. It was followed by Austria, with a 13% share.

Over the period under review, export price indicated tangible growth from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +4.9% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, preserved frozen potato export price increased by +81.5% against 2015 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 an increase of 25%. Over the period under review, the average export prices attained the maximum in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

Prices varied noticeably country of destination: the country with the highest price was Bulgaria ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Slovakia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Bulgaria (+12.4%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Hungary

In 2021, approx. X tons of frozen potatoes prepared or preserved were imported into Hungary; with an increase of 10% on the year before. Over the period under review, total imports indicated strong growth from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +7.3% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +89.2% against 2012 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 13%. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure in 2021 and are likely to continue growth in the near future.

In value terms, preserved frozen potato imports amounted to $X in 2021. In general, imports recorded a remarkable increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 with an increase of 26% against the previous year. Imports peaked in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

The Netherlands (X tons), Poland (X tons) and Belgium (X tons) were the main suppliers of preserved frozen potato imports to Hungary, together comprising 78% of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Belgium (with a CAGR of +11.3%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the Netherlands ($X), Poland ($X) and Belgium ($X) appeared to be the largest preserved frozen potato suppliers to Hungary, with a combined 75% share of total imports.
