Exports from Hungary

In 2021, fresh chicken cut exports from Hungary rose notably to X tons, surging by 15% compared with 2020 figures. In general, exports posted buoyant growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 when exports increased by 44%. The exports peaked in 2021 and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, fresh chicken cut exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Overall, total exports indicated strong growth from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +8.0% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports increased by +91.1% against 2017 indices. As a result, the exports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Slovakia (X tons), Bulgaria (X tons) and Romania (X tons) were the main destinations of fresh chicken cut exports from Hungary, with a combined 58% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Bulgaria (with a CAGR of +56.7%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Austria ($X), Slovakia ($X) and Bulgaria ($X) appeared to be the largest markets for fresh chicken cut exported from Hungary worldwide, with a combined 41% share of total exports.

In terms of the main countries of destination, Bulgaria, with a CAGR of +52.6%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The average fresh chicken cut export price stood at $X per ton in 2021, surging by 21% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, continues to indicate a slight curtailment. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when the average export price increased by 22% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the average export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably country of destination: the country with the highest price was Switzerland ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Poland ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Poland (+8.0%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Hungary

In 2021, purchases abroad of fresh or chilled cuts of chicken decreased by -8.6% to X tons for the first time since 2015, thus ending a five-year rising trend. Over the period under review, imports, however, showed a resilient increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 61% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2020, and then reduced in the following year.

In value terms, fresh chicken cut imports rose significantly to $X in 2021. In general, imports, however, saw significant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 101% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.

Imports by Country

Ukraine (X tons), Poland (X tons) and Romania (X tons) were the main suppliers of fresh chicken cut imports to Hungary, with a combined 73% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Romania (with a CAGR of +79.9%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Poland ($X), Ukraine ($X) and Romania ($X) were the largest fresh chicken cut suppliers to Hungary, together comprising 74% of total imports.

Romania, with a CAGR of +73.5%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, in terms of the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2021, the average fresh chicken cut import price amounted to $X per ton, growing by 23% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import price indicated a strong expansion from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +9.9% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when the average import price increased by 82%. Over the period under review, average import prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was the Netherlands ($X per ton), while the price for Austria ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Ukraine (+36.0%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
