Silver Ore Exports

Exports from Hong Kong SAR, China

After three years of growth, overseas shipments of silver ores and concentrates decreased by -65.6% to X tons in 2021. Overall, exports, however, posted a buoyant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 3,483% against the previous year. The exports peaked at X tons in 2020, and then fell remarkably in the following year.

In value terms, silver ore exports contracted markedly to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports, however, showed prominent growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 8,293%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2020, and then dropped dramatically in the following year.

Exports by Country

China (X tons) was the main destination for silver ore exports from Hong Kong SAR, accounting for a 98% share of total exports. It was followed by Malaysia (X tons), with a 1.5% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to China stood at +48.6%.

In value terms, China ($X) remains the key foreign market for silver ore exports from Hong Kong SAR, comprising 99% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Malaysia ($X), with a 1.4% share of total exports.

In 2021, the average silver ore export price amounted to $X per ton, increasing by 40% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 an increase of 174% against the previous year. The export price peaked at $X per ton in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

In 2021, purchases abroad of silver ores and concentrates increased by 49% to X tons, rising for the fourth consecutive year after three years of decline. Overall, imports showed a prominent increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when imports increased by 473% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, silver ore imports dropped rapidly to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports enjoyed a strong increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when imports increased by 626% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2020 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2021, China (X tons) constituted the largest silver ore supplier to Hong Kong SAR, accounting for a 89% share of total imports. Moreover, silver ore imports from China exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Mexico (X tons), ninefold.
