The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of X% year-to-year. Exports peaked in 2020 and are likely to continue growth in the near future.

In value terms, tobacco exports surged to $X in 2020. Over the period under review, exports continue to indicate a significant expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when exports increased by X% year-to-year. Over the period under review, exports attained the maximum in 2020 and are likely to see steady growth in the immediate term.

Exports by Country

Japan (X tonnes) was the main destination for tobacco exports from Greece, with a X% share of total exports. Moreover, tobacco exports to Japan exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, the Czech Republic (X tonnes), threefold. The Netherlands (X tonnes) ranked third in terms of total exports with a X% share.

The average tobacco export price stood at $X per tonne in 2020, which is down by -X% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, saw buoyant growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when the average export price increased by X% against the previous year. As a result, export price reached the peak level of $X per tonne. from 2019 to 2020, the growth in terms of the average export prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major external markets. In 2020, the country with the highest price was Japan ($X per tonne), while the average price for exports to the Netherlands ($X per tonne) was amongst the lowest.

From 2007 to 2020, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to the Czech Republic, while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2020, the amount of tobacco (smoking tobacco, chewing tobacco, snuff) imported into Greece surged to X tonnes, jumping by X% compared with 2019 figures. Overall, imports, however, continue to indicate a perceptible contraction. Imports peaked at X tonnes in 2009; however, from 2010 to 2020, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, the largest tobacco suppliers to Greece were Poland ($X), Germany ($X) and the Netherlands ($X), together comprising X% of total imports. In 2020, the average tobacco import price amounted to $X per tonne, with a decrease of -X% against the previous year. In general, import price indicated a slight increase from 2007 to 2020: its price increased at an average annual rate of +X% over the last thirteen years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 an increase of X% y-o-y. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per tonne, and then declined significantly in the following year.

Prices varied noticeably by the country of origin; the country with the highest price was the Netherlands ($X per tonne), while the price for France ($X per tonne) was amongst the lowest.
