Papaya Market Size in Ghana

In 2019, the Ghanian papaya market decreased by -X% to $X for the first time since 2016, thus ending a two-year rising trend. Overall, consumption, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2011 with an increase of X% against the previous year. Papaya consumption peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2019, consumption remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, papaya production declined to $X in 2019 estimated in export prices. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2019 figures, production increased by +X% against 2016 indices. From 2012 to 2019, production growth remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2019, the average papaya yield in Ghana contracted slightly to X tonnes per ha, shrinking by -X% against 2018. Over the period under review, the yield showed a noticeable shrinkage. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 with an increase of X% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the average papaya yield reached the maximum level at X tonnes per ha in 2009; however, from 2010 to 2019, the yield remained at a lower figure. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

In 2019, the papaya harvested area in Ghana expanded sharply to X ha, with an increase of X% on 2018 figures. Overall, the harvested area recorded resilient growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of X% y-o-y. The papaya harvested area peaked in 2019 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

In 2019, approx. X tonnes of papayas were exported from Ghana; picking up by X% against 2018 figures. Over the period under review, exports continue to indicate resilient growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2008 when exports increased by X% year-to-year. Over the period under review, exports hit record highs at X tonnes in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2019, exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, papaya exports surged to $X in 2019. Overall, exports continue to indicate a buoyant expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2008 when exports increased by X% against the previous year. Over the period under review, exports reached the maximum at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2019, exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

Germany (X tonnes) was the main destination for papaya exports from Ghana, with a X% share of total exports. Moreover, papaya exports to Germany exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Belgium (X tonnes), twofold. France (X tonnes) ranked third in terms of total exports with a X% share.

From 2007 to 2019, the average annual growth rate of volume to Germany amounted to +X%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Belgium (+X% per year) and France (+X% per year).

In value terms, Germany ($X) remains the key foreign market for papaya exports from Ghana, comprising X% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was occupied by Belgium ($X), with a X% share of total exports. It was followed by Finland, with a X% share.

From 2007 to 2019, the average annual growth rate of value to Germany amounted to +X%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Belgium (+X% per year) and Finland (+X% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The average papaya export price stood at $X per tonne in 2019, with a decrease of -X% against the previous year. In general, the export price continues to indicate a mild shrinkage. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when the average export price increased by X% against the previous year. The export price peaked at $X per tonne in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2019, export prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by the country of destination; the country with the highest price was Finland ($X per tonne), while the average price for exports to Senegal ($X per tonne) was amongst the lowest.

From 2007 to 2019, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Finland, while the prices for the other major destinations experienced mixed trend patterns.

For the seventh consecutive year, Ghana recorded decline in supplies from abroad of papayas, which decreased by X% to X kg in 2019. In general, imports faced a significant decrease. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2012 with an increase of X% against the previous year. Imports peaked at X tonnes in 2007; however, from 2008 to 2019, imports failed to regain the momentum.
