In value terms, fresh whole chicken production shrank to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Overall, the total production indicated pronounced growth from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +2.5% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, production increased by +93.2% against 2014 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when the production volume increased by 26%. Over the period under review, production attained the peak level at $X in 2020, and then contracted slightly in the following year.

Exports from Ghana

In 2021, overseas shipments of fresh or chilled whole chickens decreased by -10.4% to X tons, falling for the seventh year in a row after three years of growth. Overall, exports, however, posted resilient growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 with an increase of 263%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons. From 2015 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, fresh whole chicken exports contracted to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports, however, posted a moderate expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 102%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2015 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Togo (X tons) was the main destination for fresh whole chicken exports from Ghana, accounting for a approx. 100% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Togo stood at +6.4%.

From 2014 to 2021, the average export prices remained at a lower figure.

Imports into Ghana

In 2021, imports of fresh or chilled whole chickens into Ghana surged to X tons, picking up by 107% on the previous year. In general, imports enjoyed a strong expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when imports increased by 4,777% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2017 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, fresh whole chicken imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports enjoyed prominent growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 when imports increased by 4,677% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2017 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2021, the Netherlands (X tons) constituted the largest fresh whole chicken supplier to Ghana, with a 42% share of total imports. Moreover, fresh whole chicken imports from the Netherlands exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Germany (X tons), twofold. The third position in this ranking was held by Poland (X tons), with an 11% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume from the Netherlands amounted to +81.1%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Germany (+39.1% per year) and Poland (+27.4% per year).

In value terms, the largest fresh whole chicken suppliers to Ghana were the Netherlands ($X), Germany ($X) and Poland ($X), with a combined 77% share of total imports.

The Netherlands, with a CAGR of +69.0%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, among the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The average fresh whole chicken import price stood at $X per ton in 2021, growing by 8.8% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, saw a noticeable setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when the average import price increased by 15% against the previous year. Over the period under review, average import prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was the United States ($X per ton), while the price for the UK ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Germany (+4.5%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
