Chicken Meat Market Size in Ghana

In 2019, after three years of growth, there was significant decline in the Ghanian chicken meat market, when its value decreased by -X% to $X. Over the period under review, consumption, however, recorded measured growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2011 with an increase of X% y-o-y. Over the period under review, the market hit record highs at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2019, consumption remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, chicken meat production expanded significantly to $X in 2019 estimated in export prices. In general, production continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when the production volume increased by X% year-to-year. Over the period under review, production attained the maximum level in 2019 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.

Over the period under review, exports, however, enjoyed a buoyant increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 when exports increased by X% year-to-year. As a result, exports attained the peak of X tonnes. From 2015 to 2019, the growth exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, chicken meat exports contracted to $X in 2019. In general, exports, however, saw buoyant growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of X% against the previous year. As a result, exports reached the peak of $X. From 2015 to 2019, the growth exports failed to regain the momentum.

Togo (X tonnes) was the main destination for chicken meat exports from Ghana, with a approx. X% share of total exports.

Imports peaked at X tonnes in 2018, and then declined sharply in the following year.

In value terms, chicken meat imports contracted markedly to $X in 2019. In general, imports, however, recorded a slight expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2011 when imports increased by X% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2019, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2019, Belgium (X tonnes) constituted the largest supplier of chicken meat to Ghana, accounting for a X% share of total imports. Moreover, chicken meat imports from Belgium exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, the U.S. (X tonnes), twofold. Poland (X tonnes) ranked third in terms of total imports with a X% share.

From 2007 to 2019, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from Belgium stood at +X%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: the U.S. (-X% per year) and Poland (+X% per year).

In value terms, the largest chicken meat suppliers to Ghana were Belgium ($X), the U.S. ($X) and Poland ($X), with a combined X% share of total imports. These countries were followed by Brazil, the Netherlands, Turkey and Ukraine, which together accounted for a further X (+X% per year) recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, among the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2019, the average chicken meat import price amounted to $X per tonne, dropping by -X% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2008 an increase of X% against the previous year. The import price peaked at $X per tonne in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2019, import prices failed to regain the momentum.

Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major supplying countries. In 2019, the countries with the highest prices were Brazil ($X per tonne) and the U.S. ($X per tonne), while the price for Poland ($X per tonne) and Belgium ($X per tonne) were amongst the lowest.

From 2007 to 2019, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Brazil, while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
