Pig Iron Market Size in Germany

The German pig iron market fell markedly to $X in 2020, which is down by -X% against the previous year. Overall, consumption continues to indicate a deep setback. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 with a decrease of -X% y-o-y. Pig iron consumption peaked at $X in 2007; however, from 2008 to 2020, consumption failed to regain the momentum.

Pig Iron Production in Germany

In value terms, pig iron production reduced to $X in 2020 estimated in export prices. Overall, production showed a deep downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when the production volume decreased by -X% against the previous year. Over the period under review, production hit record highs at $X in 2007; however, from 2008 to 2020, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports from Germany

In 2020, after two years of decline, there was significant growth in overseas shipments of pig iron and spiegeleisen, when their volume increased by X% to X tonnes. Over the period under review, exports continue to indicate a strong expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2010 when exports increased by X% y-o-y. Exports peaked in 2020 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, pig iron exports soared to $X in 2020. Overall, total exports indicated a tangible expansion from 2007 to 2020: its value increased at an average annual rate of +X% over the last thirteen years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2010 when exports increased by X% against the previous year. Exports peaked at $X in 2011; however, from 2012 to 2020, exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

Turkey (X tonnes) was the main destination for pig iron exports from Germany, with a X% share of total exports. Moreover, pig iron exports to Turkey exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Poland (X tonnes), twofold. China (X tonnes) ranked third in terms of total exports with a X% share.

From 2007 to 2020, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Turkey stood at +X%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Poland (+X% per year) and China (+X% per year).

In value terms, Turkey ($X) remains the key foreign market for pig iron exports from Germany, comprising X% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was occupied by Poland ($X), with a X% share of total exports. It was followed by China, with a X% share.

From 2007 to 2020, the average annual growth rate of value to Turkey stood at +X%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Poland (+X% per year) and China (+X% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2020, the average pig iron export price amounted to $X per tonne, falling by -X% against the previous year. In general, the export price recorded a slight decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2008 an increase of X% y-o-y. As a result, export price reached the peak level of $X per tonne. From 2009 to 2020, the growth in terms of the average export prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Average prices varied somewhat for the major overseas markets. In 2020, the countries with the highest prices were Italy ($X per tonne) and France ($X per tonne), while the average price for exports to Turkey ($X per tonne) and Belgium ($X per tonne) were amongst the lowest.

From 2007 to 2020, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Italy, while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.

Pig Iron Imports

Imports into Germany

In 2020, imports of pig iron and spiegeleisen into Germany contracted notably to X tonnes, which is down by -X% compared with 2019 figures. In general, imports continue to indicate a abrupt setback. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2011 with an increase of X% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at X tonnes in 2008; however, from 2009 to 2020, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, pig iron imports contracted notably to $X in 2020. Overall, imports recorded a abrupt decrease. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2011 with an increase of X% year-to-year. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at $X in 2008; however, from 2009 to 2020, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

Brazil (X tonnes), Norway (X tonnes) and Russia (X tonnes) were the main suppliers of pig iron imports to Germany, together accounting for X% of total imports. Canada, the Netherlands, South Africa and Austria lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further X 2007 to 2020, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by Austria, while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest pig iron suppliers to Germany were Brazil ($X), Norway ($X) and Russia ($X), together comprising X% of total imports. Canada, the Netherlands, Austria and South Africa lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further X recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, in terms of the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2020, the average pig iron import price amounted to $X per tonne, dropping by -X% against the previous year. Overall, the import price recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2008 an increase of X% against the previous year. Over the period under review, average import prices reached the peak figure at $X per tonne in 2011; however, from 2012 to 2020, import prices failed to regain the momentum.

Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major supplying countries. In 2020, the countries with the highest prices were Austria ($X per tonne) and Canada ($X per tonne), while the price for South Africa ($X per tonne) and the Netherlands ($X per tonne) were amongst the lowest.
