In 2021, the German photographic paper market was finally on the rise to reach $X after two years of decline. In general, consumption, however, recorded a noticeable contraction. Photographic paper consumption peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2021, overseas shipments of photographic paper, paperboard and textiles increased by 28% to X square meters, rising for the second consecutive year after three years of decline. Over the period under review, exports, however, showed a noticeable curtailment. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 85% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X square meters. From 2017 to 2021, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, photographic paper exports fell modestly to $X in 2021. In general, exports, however, saw a deep contraction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 86%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2017 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
Exports by Country
Poland (X square meters), France (X square meters) and the Netherlands (X square meters) were the main destinations of photographic paper exports from Germany, with a combined 40% share of total exports. The Czech Republic, Austria, Greece, Hungary, Japan, Mexico, Romania, Taiwan (Chinese), Bosnia and Herzegovina and Slovakia lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 40%.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by Mexico (with a CAGR of +69.1%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest markets for photographic paper exported from Germany were the Netherlands ($X), Poland ($X) and Austria ($X), together accounting for 43% of total exports. France, the Czech Republic, Hungary, Greece, Japan, Mexico, Taiwan (Chinese), Slovakia, Romania and Bosnia and Herzegovina lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 34%.
In terms of the main countries of destination, Mexico, with a CAGR of +35.2%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The average photographic paper export price stood at $X per square meter in 2021, dropping by -23% against the previous year. In general, the export price saw a noticeable slump. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 when the average export price increased by 20% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the average export prices attained the maximum at $X per square meter in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably country of destination: the country with the highest price was Austria ($X per square meter), while the average price for exports to Romania ($X per square meter) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to the Netherlands (+2.2%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced mixed trend patterns.

Imports into Germany
In 2021, overseas purchases of photographic paper, paperboard and textiles increased by 35% to X square meters, rising for the second consecutive year after three years of decline. Overall, imports, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. Imports peaked at X square meters in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, photographic paper imports soared to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, showed a drastic downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 30%. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2017 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
Imports by Country
In 2021, the Netherlands (X square meters) constituted the largest supplier of photographic paper to Germany, accounting for a 80% share of total imports. Moreover, photographic paper imports from the Netherlands exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Italy (X square meters), sixfold.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume from the Netherlands was relatively modest. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Italy (+38.4% per year) and the UK (-41.6% per year).
In value terms, the Netherlands ($X) constituted the largest supplier of photographic paper to Germany, comprising 85% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Italy ($X), with a 3% share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from the Netherlands amounted to -4.0%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Italy (+10.7% per year) and the UK (-39.6% per year).

The average photographic paper import price stood at $X per square meter in 2021, falling by -10.1% against the previous year. In general, the import price recorded a abrupt decrease. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when the average import price increased by 8.5%. The import price peaked at $X per square meter in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was the UK ($X per square meter), while the price for Italy ($X per square meter) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the UK (+3.5%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced a decline.
