Exports from Germany

In 2021, after two years of growth, there was significant decline in shipments abroad of ethylene, when their volume decreased by -12.5% to X tons. Overall, exports, however, showed a measured expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 80% against the previous year. The exports peaked at X tons in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, ethylene exports expanded markedly to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports saw a mild shrinkage. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 when exports increased by 40% against the previous year. The exports peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

Belgium (X tons) was the main destination for ethylene exports from Germany, accounting for a 87% share of total exports. Moreover, ethylene exports to Belgium exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, the Netherlands (X tons), ninefold.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume to Belgium amounted to +1.8%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: the Netherlands (+26.8% per year) and the Czech Republic (+4.0% per year).

In value terms, Belgium ($X) remains the key foreign market for ethylene exports from Germany, comprising 84% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by the Netherlands ($X), with a 12% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value to Belgium stood at -2.7%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: the Netherlands (+20.9% per year) and the Czech Republic (+1.7% per year).

In 2021, the average ethylene export price amounted to $X per ton, growing by 24% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, showed a pronounced descent. Over the period under review, the average export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Average prices varied somewhat for the major overseas markets. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the Czech Republic ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Belgium ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to the Czech Republic (-2.2%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.

Imports into Germany

In 2021, purchases abroad of ethylene decreased by -9.2% to X tons, falling for the second year in a row after two years of growth. In general, imports recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 with an increase of 32%. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at X tons in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, ethylene imports soared to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports showed a deep downturn. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when imports increased by 31% against the previous year. Imports peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

In 2021, the Netherlands (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of ethylene to Germany, with a 59% share of total imports. Moreover, ethylene imports from the Netherlands exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Belgium (X tons), fourfold. France (X tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 7% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume from the Netherlands was relatively modest. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Belgium (+6.8% per year) and France (+13.8% per year).

In value terms, the Netherlands ($X) constituted the largest supplier of ethylene to Germany, comprising 50% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Belgium ($X), with a 20% share of total imports. It was followed by France, with an 8.7% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value from the Netherlands totaled -6.3%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Belgium (+4.4% per year) and France (+11.0% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The average ethylene import price stood at $X per ton in 2021, picking up by 28% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, showed a perceptible contraction. Over the period under review, average import prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Norway ($X per ton), while the price for the Netherlands ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Norway (+0.5%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced a decline.
