In 2021, shipments abroad of electronic calculators and pocket-size data recording, reproducing and displaying machines with calculating functions increased by 24% to X units, rising for the second consecutive year after two years of decline. Over the period under review, exports, however, showed a perceptible descent. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 with an increase of 44%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X units. From 2015 to 2021, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, calculator exports soared to $X in 2021. In general, exports continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The exports peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.
Exports by Country
France (X units), Spain (X units) and Poland (X units) were the main destinations of calculator exports from Germany, with a combined 58% share of total exports. These countries were followed by the Netherlands, Belgium, Italy, Austria and the Czech Republic, which together accounted for a further 29%.
From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were in Belgium (with a CAGR of +23.3%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, France ($X) remains the key foreign market for calculator exports from Germany, comprising 44% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Poland ($X), with a 13% share of total exports. It was followed by Spain, with a 9.7% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to France totaled -2.4%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Poland (+11.9% per year) and Spain (+12.3% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2021, the average calculator export price amounted to $X per unit, standing approx. at the previous year. Over the period under review, export price indicated a temperate increase from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +3.6% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, calculator export price decreased by -25.9% against 2018 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 when the average export price increased by 42% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the average export prices attained the maximum at $X per unit in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major foreign markets. In 2021, the country with the highest price was France ($X per unit), while the average price for exports to Belgium ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to the Czech Republic (+8.5%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Germany
In 2021, supplies from abroad of electronic calculators and pocket-size data recording, reproducing and displaying machines with calculating functions increased by 3.9% to X units, rising for the fourth year in a row after three years of decline. In general, imports, however, showed a pronounced contraction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when imports increased by 16%. Imports peaked at X units in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, calculator imports reached $X in 2021. Overall, imports continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when imports increased by 18%. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2019 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
Imports by Country
Thailand (X units), China (X units) and the Netherlands (X units) were the main suppliers of calculator imports to Germany, together comprising 77% of total imports. These countries were followed by the Philippines, Poland, the Czech Republic, Japan and Portugal, which together accounted for a further 19%.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by the Philippines (with a CAGR of +129.5%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the Netherlands ($X), China ($X) and Thailand ($X) constituted the largest calculator suppliers to Germany, together comprising 74% of total imports. Poland, the Czech Republic, the Philippines, Portugal and Japan lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 19%.
In terms of the main suppliers, the Philippines, with a CAGR of +114.8%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the average calculator import price amounted to $X per unit, with an increase of 5% against the previous year. In general, the import price showed a strong expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 when the average import price increased by 65%. The import price peaked at $X per unit in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Portugal ($X per unit), while the price for the Philippines ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Thailand (+15.2%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced mixed trend patterns.
