Barley Market Size in Germany

In 2020, the German barley market decreased by -X% to $X for the first time since 2016, thus ending a three-year rising trend. Overall, consumption, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2008 when the market value increased by X% against the previous year. As a result, consumption reached the peak level of $X. From 2009 to 2020, the growth of the market remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Barley Production in Germany

In value terms, barley production contracted to $X in 2020 estimated in export prices. Overall, production recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2008 when the production volume increased by X% year-to-year. As a result, production reached the peak level of $X. From 2009 to 2020, production growth remained at a lower figure.

The average yield of barley in Germany stood at X tonnes per ha in 2020, with an increase of X% compared with 2019 figures. The yield figure increased at an average annual rate of +X% from 2007 to 2020; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with only minor fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 when the yield increased by X% year-to-year. Over the period under review, the average barley yield reached the maximum level at X tonnes per ha in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2020, the yield stood at a somewhat lower figure. In 2020, overseas shipments of barley increased by X% to X tonnes for the first time since 2016, thus ending a three-year declining trend. In general, exports, however, continue to indicate a slight decline. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 with an increase of X% year-to-year. Over the period under review, exports attained the peak figure at X tonnes in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2020, exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, barley exports skyrocketed to $X in 2020. Overall, exports, however, recorded a perceptible contraction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 when exports increased by X% year-to-year. Over the period under review, exports attained the maximum at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2020, exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

The Netherlands (X tonnes), Saudi Arabia (X tonnes) and Algeria (X tonnes) were the main destinations of barley exports from Germany, together comprising X% of total exports. Iran and Morocco lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further X 2007 to 2020, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by Iran (+X% per year), while exports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the Netherlands ($X), Saudi Arabia ($X) and Algeria ($X) were the largest markets for barley exported from Germany worldwide, together accounting for X% of total exports. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2011 an increase of X% year-to-year. The export price peaked at $X per tonne in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2020, export prices remained at a lower figure.

Average prices varied noticeably for the major export markets. In 2020, the highest prices were recorded for prices to Algeria ($X per tonne) and Iran ($X per tonne), while the average price for exports to Saudi Arabia ($X per tonne) and the Netherlands ($X per tonne) were amongst the lowest.

From 2007 to 2020, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Iran, while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.

Imports into Germany

In 2020, purchases abroad of barley was finally on the rise to reach X tonnes after two years of decline. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +X% from 2007 to 2020; the trend pattern remained consistent, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 when imports increased by X% year-to-year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs in 2020 and are likely to see gradual growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, barley imports totaled $X in 2020. Overall, imports continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2011 when imports increased by X% year-to-year. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2020, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

France (X tonnes), the Czech Republic (X tonnes) and Poland (X tonnes) were the main suppliers of barley imports to Germany, together accounting for X% of total imports.

From 2007 to 2020, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by Poland, while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, France ($X) constituted the largest supplier of barley to Germany, comprising X% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was occupied by Denmark ($X), with a X% share of total imports. It was followed by the Czech Republic, with a X% share.

From 2007 to 2020, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from France was relatively modest. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Denmark (-X% per year) and the Czech Republic (+X% per year).
