In 2021, the average yield of raw hides and skins of cattle in France contracted modestly to X kg per head, stabilizing at 2020. In 2021, number of animals slaughtered for cattle hide and skin production in France reached X heads, leveling off at the year before. Over the period under review, exports, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when exports increased by 21%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons. From 2019 to 2021, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, cattle hide and skin exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Overall, exports, however, saw a abrupt descent. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

Italy (X tons) was the main destination for cattle hide and skin exports from France, accounting for a 74% share of total exports. Moreover, cattle hide and skin exports to Italy exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, China (X tons), sixfold. Spain (X tons) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 3.8% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume to Italy amounted to -1.0%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: China (+2.5% per year) and Spain (-0.1% per year).

In 2021, supplies from abroad of raw hides and skins of cattle was finally on the rise to reach X tons after two years of decline. In general, imports saw a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

The UK (X tons), Italy (X tons) and Germany (X tons) were the main suppliers of cattle hide and skin imports to France, with a combined 72% share of total imports. Ireland, Switzerland, Spain, the Netherlands, Canada and Belgium lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 25%.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by Ireland (with a CAGR of +53.8%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
