The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 with an increase of 14%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, fertilizer exports surged to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.
Exports by Country
The UK (X tons), Germany (X tons) and Spain (X tons) were the main destinations of fertilizer exports from France, with a combined 28% share of total exports. Belgium, the Netherlands, Italy, Sweden, Ireland, Switzerland and Brazil lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 17%.
From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Sweden (with a CAGR of +14.9%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the UK ($X), Spain ($X) and Germany ($X) were the largest markets for fertilizer exported from France worldwide, with a combined 25% share of total exports. Belgium, the Netherlands, Italy, Sweden, Ireland, Switzerland and Brazil lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 16%.
Sweden, with a CAGR of +12.7%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, in terms of the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
In 2021, the average fertilizer export price amounted to $X per ton, with an increase of 61% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price showed a relatively flat trend pattern. As a result, the export price reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major overseas markets. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Spain ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Brazil ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Belgium (+3.8%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
Fertilizer Imports
Imports into France
In 2021, supplies from abroad of fertilizers decreased by -0.3% to X tons, falling for the fourth consecutive year after two years of growth. In general, imports showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 when imports increased by 7%. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2015 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, fertilizer imports soared to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports continue to indicate a slight curtailment. Imports peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.
Imports by Country
Belgium (X tons), the Netherlands (X tons) and Germany (X tons) were the main suppliers of fertilizer imports to France, with a combined 26% share of total imports. These countries were followed by Egypt, Spain, Morocco, Algeria, Lithuania, Russia, Trinidad and Tobago, Poland and Belarus, which together accounted for a further 20%.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by Algeria (with a CAGR of +43.3%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Belgium ($X), the Netherlands ($X) and Egypt ($X) appeared to be the largest fertilizer suppliers to France, with a combined 25% share of total imports. Morocco, Algeria, Germany, Spain, Russia, Lithuania, Trinidad and Tobago, Poland and Belarus lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 20%.
In terms of the main suppliers, Algeria, with a CAGR of +48.1%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the average fertilizer import price amounted to $X per ton, surging by 53% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The import price peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Morocco ($X per ton), while the price for Belarus ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Algeria (+3.4%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced a decline.
