In value terms, chestnut exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. In general, exports, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The exports peaked at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Exports by Country
Switzerland (X tonnes), Germany (X tonnes) and Spain (X tonnes) were the main destinations of chestnut exports from France, together accounting for X% of total exports. Italy, Belgium, the UK, Austria and Luxembourg lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further X 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by Austria (+X%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Switzerland ($X), Germany ($X) and Spain ($X) were the largest markets for chestnut exported from France worldwide, with a combined X% share of total exports.
Spain, with a CAGR of +X%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, among the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
The average chestnut export price stood at $X per tonne in 2021, waning by -X% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 an increase of X% y-o-y. The export price peaked at $X per tonne in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major external markets. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Luxembourg ($X per tonne), while the average price for exports to Italy ($X per tonne) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Spain (+X%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced mixed trend patterns.

Imports into France
In 2021, supplies from abroad of chestnuts decreased by -X% to X tonnes for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year rising trend. In general, imports, however, recorded a measured increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 with an increase of X% year-to-year. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tonnes. From 2016 to 2021, the growth imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, chestnut imports reduced notably to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, total imports indicated a buoyant expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +X% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of X% y-o-y. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at $X in 2020, and then declined dramatically in the following year.

Italy (X tonnes), Spain (X tonnes) and Portugal (X tonnes) were the main suppliers of chestnut imports to France, together comprising X% of total imports. The import price peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.
