Whey Exports
Exports in Europe
In 2022, after two years of growth, there was significant decline in shipments abroad of whey, when their volume decreased by X% to X tons. Overall, exports, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when exports increased by X%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2021, and then dropped in the following year.
In value terms, whey exports rose sharply to $X in 2022. Total exports indicated a slight expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of X% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by X% against 2016 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when exports increased by X%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.
Exports by Country
In 2022, Germany (X tons), followed by France (X tons), the Netherlands (X tons), Italy (X tons), Poland (X tons), Belgium (X tons), Ireland (X tons), Austria (X tons) and Belarus (X tons) represented the largest exporters of whey, together comprising X% of total exports. Sweden (X tons), Latvia (X tons), Spain (X tons) and the Czech Republic (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the key exporting countries, was attained by Latvia (with a CAGR of X%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Germany ($X), France ($X) and the Netherlands ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2022, together comprising X% of total exports. Ireland, Italy, Poland, Austria, Belarus, Spain, the Czech Republic, Belgium, Latvia and Sweden lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further X%.
Latvia, with a CAGR of X%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, among the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, the export price in Europe amounted to $X per ton, growing by X% against the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of X%. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when the export price increased by X%. Over the period under review, the export prices reached the peak figure in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Ireland ($X per ton), while Sweden ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Italy (X%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

For the fourth consecutive year, Europe recorded growth in overseas purchases of whey, which increased by X% to X tons in 2022. Over the period under review, imports saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of X% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, whey imports rose rapidly to $X in 2022. In general, imports showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of X%. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.
Imports by Country
The Netherlands (X tons) and Germany (X tons) represented the key importers of whey in 2022, amounting to near X% and X% of total imports, respectively. France (X tons) took the next position in the ranking, followed by Denmark (X tons). All these countries together took near X% share of total imports. Italy (X tons), Poland (X tons), Belgium (X tons), the Czech Republic (X tons), Lithuania (X tons), the UK (X tons), Austria (X tons) and Slovakia (X tons) held a minor share of total imports.
