In 2021, overseas shipments of brewing or distilling dregs and waste decreased by -0.3% to X tons, falling for the second year in a row after eight years of growth. Total exports indicated a strong increase from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +7.3% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports decreased by -4.5% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when exports increased by 16% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, brewing dregs exports soared to $X in 2021. Total exports indicated a remarkable increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +7.4% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when exports increased by 34% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.
Exports by Country
The shipments of the three major exporters of brewing or distilling dregs and waste, namely Germany, Belgium and the Netherlands, represented more than half of total export. Hungary (X tons) ranks next in terms of the total exports with a 7.8% share, followed by Austria (6.4%), France (5.6%) and Slovakia (4.9%). Russia (X tons), Ireland (X tons), the Czech Republic (X tons), Bulgaria (X tons), Poland (X tons) and the UK (X tons) took a minor share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were in Ireland (with a CAGR of +58.5%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the Netherlands ($X) remains the largest brewing dregs supplier in Europe, comprising 26% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Belgium ($X), with a 13% share of total exports. It was followed by Hungary, with an 11% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in the Netherlands amounted to +18.2%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Belgium (+6.0% per year) and Hungary (+12.1% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2021, the export price in Europe amounted to $X per ton, surging by 18% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price showed a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Bulgaria ($X per ton), while the Czech Republic ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Poland (+8.2%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

After two years of decline, purchases abroad of brewing or distilling dregs and waste increased by 17% to X tons in 2021. Total imports indicated resilient growth from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +7.4% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 24%. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2018; afterwards, it flattened through to 2021.
In value terms, brewing dregs imports soared to $X in 2021. Total imports indicated resilient growth from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +8.5% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
Imports by Country
In 2021, the Netherlands (X tons), the UK (X tons), Ireland (X tons) and France (X tons) was the largest importer of brewing or distilling dregs and waste in Europe, generating 61% of total import. Spain (X tons) held a 6.3% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Germany (6.3%). The following importers - Italy (X tons), Poland (X tons), Belgium (X tons), Hungary (X tons), Austria (X tons) and Denmark (X tons) - together made up 17% of total imports.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main importing countries, was attained by Spain (with a CAGR of +23.1%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the UK ($X), Ireland ($X) and the Netherlands ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, with a combined 51% share of total imports. France, Spain, Germany, Italy, Poland, Denmark, Belgium, Hungary and Austria lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 40%.
Among the main importing countries, Spain, with a CAGR of +20.2%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the import price in Europe amounted to $X per ton, with an increase of 17% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price saw mild growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 an increase of 18% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices reached the maximum at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Spain ($X per ton), while Belgium ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
