For the fifth consecutive year, the European Union recorded growth in overseas shipments of wood pellets, which increased by 1.3% to X tons in 2021. Overall, exports showed a resilient expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when exports increased by 28% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

Exports by Country
In 2021, Latvia (X tons), distantly followed by Estonia (X tons), Austria (X tons), Germany (X tons), Denmark (X tons), Lithuania (X tons) and Belgium (X tons) were the key exporters of wood pellets, together creating 67% of total exports. Portugal (X tons), Poland (X tons), the Czech Republic (X tons), Romania (X tons), Croatia (X tons) and Sweden (X tons) held a relatively small share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were in Belgium (with a CAGR of +33.8%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest wood pellets supplying countries in the European Union were Latvia ($X), Estonia ($X) and Austria ($X), together comprising 40% of total exports. Germany, Denmark, Lithuania, Belgium, Poland, the Czech Republic, Portugal, Romania, Croatia and Sweden lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 46%.
Belgium, with a CAGR of +35.0%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, in terms of the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
The export price in the European Union stood at $X per ton in 2021, rising by 1.9% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 an increase of 14%. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, major exporting countries recorded the following prices: in Austria ($X per ton) and Germany ($X per ton), while Portugal ($X per ton) and Estonia ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Belgium (+0.9%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Imports in the EU
In 2021, overseas purchases of wood pellets increased by 8.7% to X tons, rising for the sixth consecutive year after two years of decline. Total imports indicated a remarkable increase from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +7.0% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +82.0% against 2015 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when imports increased by 21% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum in 2021 and are likely to see steady growth in years to come.

Imports by Country
In 2021, Denmark (X tons), the Netherlands (X tons) and Italy (X tons) represented the largest importer of wood pellets in the European Union, mixing up 64% of total import. It was distantly followed by Belgium (X tons), France (X tons) and Latvia (X tons), together making up a 17% share of total imports. Austria (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were in France (with a CAGR of +43.4%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest wood pellets importing markets in the European Union were Denmark ($X), the Netherlands ($X) and Italy ($X), with a combined 66% share of total imports. Belgium, France, Austria and Latvia lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 19%.
France, with a CAGR of +39.3%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the import price in the European Union amounted to $X per ton, almost unchanged from the previous year. Overall, the import price saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when the import price increased by 8.3% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was France ($X per ton), while Latvia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the Netherlands (-0.5%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the import price figures.
