Unwrought Lead Market Size in the EU

In 2020, the EU unwrought lead market decreased by -X% to $X, falling for the second consecutive year after six years of growth. Over the period under review, consumption, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of X% year-to-year. Over the period under review, the market reached the peak level at $X in 2007; however, from 2008 to 2020, consumption failed to regain the momentum.

In value terms, unwrought lead production declined modestly to $X in 2020 estimated in export prices. Over the period under review, production, however, saw a mild decrease. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when the production volume increased by X% year-to-year. The level of production peaked at $X in 2007; however, from 2008 to 2020, production remained at a lower figure.

Production By Country in the EU

The countries with the highest volumes of unwrought lead production in 2020 were Germany (X tons), Poland (X tons) and the Netherlands (X tons), with a combined X% share of total production. Belgium, Spain, Sweden and Bulgaria lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further X 2007 to 2020, the biggest increases were in Bulgaria, while unwrought lead production for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2020, after five years of growth, there was decline in overseas shipments of unwrought lead, when their volume decreased by -X% to X tons. Total exports indicated a slight increase from 2007 to 2020: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +X% over the last thirteen-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2010 with an increase of X% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2019, and then contracted in the following year.

In value terms, unwrought lead exports fell modestly to $X in 2020. Total exports indicated modest growth from 2007 to 2020: its value increased at an average annual rate of +X% over the last thirteen-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2020 figures, exports decreased by -X% against 2018 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when exports increased by X% year-to-year. Over the period under review, exports hit record highs at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2020, exports failed to regain the momentum.

Exports by Country

The shipments of the four major exporters of unwrought lead, namely the Czech Republic, Poland, Germany and Belgium, represented more than two-thirds of total export. Bulgaria (X tons) occupied a X% share (based on tons) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by France (X%) and Sweden (X%).

From 2007 to 2020, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the leading exporting countries, was attained by the Czech Republic, while exports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Prices varied noticeably by the country of origin; the country with the highest price was Germany ($X per ton), while Sweden ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2007 to 2020, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Belgium, while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in the EU

For the third year in a row, the European Union recorded growth in supplies from abroad of unwrought lead, which increased by X% to X tons in 2020. Total imports indicated temperate growth from 2007 to 2020: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +X% over the last thirteen-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2020 figures, imports increased by +X% against 2016 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of X% y-o-y. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure in 2020 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.

The Czech Republic was the key importer of unwrought lead in the European Union, with the volume of imports accounting for X tons, which was near X% of total imports in 2020. Germany (X tons) took the second position in the ranking, followed by Greece (X tons), Italy (X tons), Austria (X tons), Belgium (X tons) and Spain (X tons). All these countries together held approx. X% share of total imports.

The Czech Republic was also the fastest-growing in terms of the unwrought lead imports, with a CAGR of +X% from 2007 to 2020. At the same time, Greece (+X%) and Spain (+X%) displayed positive paces of growth. Belgium and Germany experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Italy (-X%) and Austria (-X%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of the Czech Republic (+X p.p.) and Greece (+X p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2007-2020, the share of Belgium (-X p.p.), Austria (-X p.p.), Italy (-X p.p.) and Germany (-X p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
