Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.

The shipments of the five major exporters of splitting, slicing or paring machines, namely Germany, the Netherlands, the Czech Republic, Belgium and Italy, represented more than two-thirds of total export. It was distantly followed by Denmark (X units), generating a 5.8% share of total exports. Austria (X units), Slovenia (X units), France (X units), Sweden (X units), Estonia (X units) and Finland (X units) took a minor share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for the Netherlands (with a CAGR of +16.4%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Germany ($X) remains the largest wood slicing machine supplier in the European Union, comprising 35% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Austria ($X), with a 14% share of total exports. It was followed by Finland, with a 13% share.

In Germany, wood slicing machine exports declined by an average annual rate of -1.1% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Austria (-0.8% per year) and Finland (-3.1% per year).

The export price in the European Union stood at $X per unit in 2021, shrinking by -2% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price recorded a perceptible decline. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when the export price increased by 15% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per unit in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Finland ($X per unit), while Denmark ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Sweden (+15.8%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in the EU

After two years of decline, purchases abroad of splitting, slicing or paring machines increased by 17% to X units in 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, continue to indicate a slight curtailment. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 18% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X units in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, wood slicing machine imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Total imports indicated a moderate expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +3.7% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +98.8% against 2016 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 43%. The level of import peaked in 2021 and is likely to continue growth in the near future.

In 2021, Germany (X units), distantly followed by the Czech Republic (X units), Italy (X units), the Netherlands (X units), France (X units), Finland (X units) and Belgium (X units) represented the major importers of splitting, slicing or paring machines, together committing 73% of total imports. The following importers - Denmark (X units), Sweden (X units), Poland (X units), Spain (X units), Hungary (X units) and Austria (X units) - together made up 18% of total imports.

Imports into Germany decreased at an average annual rate of -6.7% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Spain (+28.2%), Poland (+14.0%), Hungary (+10.0%), the Czech Republic (+8.4%), Italy (+6.9%), Belgium (+5.0%) and the Netherlands (+3.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Spain emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in the European Union, with a CAGR of +28.2% from 2012-2021. France experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Denmark (-2.5%), Austria (-5.1%), Finland (-5.6%) and Sweden (-11.7%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of the Czech Republic, Italy, the Netherlands, Spain, Poland and Belgium increased by +7.4, +4.3, +2.8, +2.4, +2.3 and +2 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Germany ($X), France ($X) and the Netherlands ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, with a combined 55% share of total imports.

In terms of the main importing countries, France, with a CAGR of +14.0%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in the European Union stood at $X per unit in 2021, rising by 7.5% against the previous year. Import price indicated a remarkable increase from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +5.2% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, wood slicing machine import price decreased by -1.4% against 2019 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 an increase of 22% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices reached the maximum at $X per unit in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was France ($X per unit), while Denmark ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
