For the fourth year in a row, the European Union recorded growth in overseas shipments of smoked pacific, atlantic and danube salmon, which increased by X% to X tonnes in 2021. The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of +X% from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern remained consistent, with only minor fluctuations being observed throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when exports increased by X%. The volume of export peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.
In value terms, smoked salmon exports expanded slightly to $X in 2021. Total exports indicated strong growth from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +X% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports increased by +X% against 2014 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 when exports increased by X%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure in 2021 and are likely to see steady growth in the near future.
Exports by Country
In 2021, Poland (X tonnes) represented the key exporter of smoked pacific, atlantic and danube salmon, generating X% of total exports. Lithuania (X tonnes) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a X% share, followed by Germany (X%), Denmark (X%) and the Netherlands (X%). The following exporters - Belgium (X tonnes) and Greece (X tonnes) - together made up X% of total exports.
Exports from Poland increased at an average annual rate of +X% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Greece (+X%), Belgium (+X%), the Netherlands (+X%), Lithuania (+X%) and Germany (+X%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Greece emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in the European Union, with a CAGR of +X% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Denmark (-X%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Lithuania, Belgium, Greece and the Netherlands increased by +X, +X, +X and +X percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Poland ($X) remains the largest smoked salmon supplier in the European Union, comprising X% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was occupied by Lithuania ($X), with a X% share of total exports. It was followed by Germany, with a X% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Poland stood at +X%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Lithuania (+X% per year) and Germany (+X% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The export price in the European Union stood at $X per tonne in 2021, remaining relatively unchanged against the previous year. Over the last nine-year period, it increased at an average annual rate of +X%. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 an increase of X% against the previous year. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per tonne. From 2018 to 2021, the the export prices failed to regain momentum.
Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, major exporting countries recorded the following prices: in Greece ($X per tonne) and Belgium ($X per tonne), while Lithuania ($X per tonne) and Denmark ($X per tonne) were amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Lithuania (+X%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in the EU
In 2021, purchases abroad of smoked pacific, atlantic and danube salmon increased by X% to X tonnes for the first time since 2016, thus ending a four-year declining trend. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +X% over the period from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern remained consistent, with only minor fluctuations being observed throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of X% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at X tonnes in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, smoked salmon imports expanded remarkably to $X in 2021. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +X% from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 with an increase of X% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.
Imports by Country
In 2021, Germany (X tonnes), distantly followed by Italy (X tonnes), France (X tonnes) and Belgium (X tonnes) were the major importers of smoked pacific, atlantic and danube salmon, together creating X% of total imports. Austria (X tonnes), Sweden (X tonnes), Denmark (X tonnes), the Netherlands (X tonnes), Greece (X tonnes) and Portugal (X tonnes) followed a long way behind the leaders.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the leading importing countries, was attained by Portugal (with a CAGR of +X%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Germany ($X), Italy ($X) and France ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, with a combined X% share of total imports. Belgium, Austria, Sweden, Denmark, the Netherlands, Portugal and Greece lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further X, with a CAGR of +X%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the import price in the European Union amounted to $X per tonne, standing approx. at the previous year. Over the last nine-year period, it increased at an average annual rate of +X%. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when the import price increased by X%. Over the period under review, import prices attained the peak figure at $X per tonne in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.
