After four years of growth, overseas shipments of railway or tramway goods vans and wagons (not self-propelled) decreased by -9.7% to X units in 2021. Overall, exports, however, showed a prominent expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 with an increase of 240% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X units, and then fell in the following year.
In value terms, railway goods wagon exports contracted to $X in 2021. Total exports indicated a measured increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +3.9% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports increased by +68.7% against 2016 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when exports increased by 29%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at $X in 2020, and then declined in the following year.
Exports by Country
Slovakia represented the largest exporting country with an export of around X units, which amounted to 44% of total exports. Germany (X units) held the second position in the ranking, followed by Romania (X units), Bulgaria (X units), Poland (X units), the Czech Republic (X units) and the Netherlands (X units). All these countries together took approx. 46% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to railway goods wagon exports from Slovakia stood at +32.4%. At the same time, the Netherlands (+83.8%), Romania (+17.8%), the Czech Republic (+14.7%), Bulgaria (+13.2%) and Poland (+6.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, the Netherlands emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in the European Union, with a CAGR of +83.8% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Germany (-3.6%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Slovakia (+34 p.p.), the Netherlands (+5 p.p.) and Romania (+3.6 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Poland and Germany saw its share reduced by -3.7% and -34% from 2012 to 2021, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Slovakia ($X) remains the largest railway goods wagon supplier in the European Union, comprising 37% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Poland ($X), with a 14% share of total exports. It was followed by Romania, with a 13% share.
In Slovakia, railway goods wagon exports expanded at an average annual rate of +7.9% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Poland (+0.3% per year) and Romania (+8.0% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2021, the export price in the European Union amounted to $X per unit, surging by 4.5% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, showed a abrupt slump. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 when the export price increased by 30% against the previous year. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per unit. From 2017 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Poland ($X per unit), while the Netherlands ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the Netherlands (+27.0%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Imports in the EU
In 2021, purchases abroad of railway or tramway goods vans and wagons (not self-propelled) increased by 2.8% to X units, rising for the fifth year in a row after three years of decline. Over the period under review, imports recorded a resilient increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 197% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs in 2021 and are likely to see steady growth in the immediate term.
In value terms, railway goods wagon imports reached $X in 2021. Total imports indicated a notable expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +2.9% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +129.2% against 2016 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when imports increased by 34%. The level of import peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.
Imports by Country
In 2021, Germany (X units) represented the key importer of railway or tramway goods vans and wagons (not self-propelled), mixing up 36% of total imports. Poland (X units) took a 15% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Austria (13%), Slovakia (12%) and the Czech Republic (8.3%). The following importers - Estonia (X units), Hungary (X units) and France (X units) - each accounted for a 5.6% share of total imports.
Imports into Germany increased at an average annual rate of +8.1% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Poland (+43.3%), Slovakia (+28.8%), the Czech Republic (+26.4%), Hungary (+18.6%) and Austria (+11.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Poland emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in the European Union, with a CAGR of +43.3% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Estonia (-4.9%) and France (-8.7%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Poland, Slovakia and the Czech Republic increased by +14, +9.1 and +5.7 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Germany ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported railway or tramway goods vans and wagons (not self-propelled) in the European Union, comprising 38% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Poland ($X), with a 17% share of total imports. It was followed by Austria, with a 14% share.
In Germany, railway goods wagon imports expanded at an average annual rate of +7.5% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Poland (+32.6% per year) and Austria (+2.5% per year).
Import Prices by Country
The import price in the European Union stood at $X per unit in 2021, increasing by 6% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, saw a abrupt slump. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 an increase of 44%. Over the period under review, import prices attained the maximum at $X per unit in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Poland ($X per unit), while Estonia ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
