In 2020, after two years of decline, there was significant growth in the EU printing ink market, when its value increased by X% to $X. In general, consumption, however, showed a mild contraction. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2020, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Germany (X tonnes) remains the largest printing ink producing country in the European Union, comprising approx. X% of total volume. Moreover, printing ink production in Germany exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Italy (X tonnes), threefold. The third position in this ranking was occupied by the Netherlands (X tonnes), with a X% share.

From 2007 to 2020, the average annual growth rate of volume in Germany stood at -X%. The remaining producing countries recorded the following average annual rates of production growth: Italy (+X% per year) and the Netherlands (+X% per year).

Exports in the EU

In 2020, overseas shipments of printing ink decreased by -X% to X tonnes, falling for the third consecutive year after two years of growth. Over the period under review, exports showed a pronounced curtailment. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2010 with an increase of X% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X tonnes in 2007; however, from 2008 to 2020, exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, printing ink exports dropped to $X in 2020. Overall, exports continue to indicate a mild slump. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when exports increased by X% y-o-y. As a result, exports reached the peak of $X. from 2018 to 2020, the growth exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

Germany was the main exporting country with an export of around X tonnes, which accounted for X% of total exports. The Netherlands (X tonnes) occupied an X% share (based on tonnes) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Italy (X%), Spain (X%), France (X%) and Belgium (X%). Luxembourg (X tonnes) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2007 to 2020, average annual rates of growth with regard to printing ink exports from Germany stood at -X%. At the same time, Luxembourg (+X%), Spain (+X%) and the Netherlands (+X%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Luxembourg emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in the European Union, with a CAGR of +X% from 2007-2020. By contrast, Italy (-X%), France (-X%) and Belgium (-X%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of the Netherlands (+X p.p.), Spain (+X p.p.) and Luxembourg (+X p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2007-2020, the share of Belgium (-X p.p.) and Germany (-X p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Germany ($X), the Netherlands ($X) and France ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2020, with a combined X% share of total exports. The printing ink export price in the European Union stood at $X per tonne in 2020, surging by X% against the previous year.
