Abstract

Table of Contents
According to market research conducted by IndexBox, a significant drop of the plywood production in 2008-2009 was followed by upsurge and further moderate growth over the next five years. In 2016, production turned downward, declining mildly by 1% Y-o-Y to 4,239 thousand cubic meters. Despite a healthy annual increase over the recovery period from 2010 to 2016, production failed to achieve the pre-crisis level of 2007.

Non-coniferous plywood accounted for the highest share (60% in 2016) of EU plywood production (in physical terms), of which an 8% share was taken by tropical plywood. Softwood plywood accounted for 40% of European production in 2016.
In Finland, coniferous plywood was even more popular, representing more than half of total plywood output.

In Romania, non-coniferous plywood held a major share of plywood production (86%), of which only 1% accounted for tropical plywood.
In Poland, non-coniferous plywood production maintained an important share of plywood output at 70% of total output.
In Spain, non-coniferous represented roughly 64% of plywood production, of which 34% accounted for tropical plywood.

The countries with the largest production of plywood in absolute volumes were Finland (1,150 thousand cubic meters), Romania (623 thousand cubic meters), Poland (419 thousand cubic meters) and Spain (284 thousand cubic meters).
Positive dynamics in plywood production among the main producing countries from 2007 to 2016 were recorded in Romania (+24.6% per year), while for the other three EU leaders (Finland, Poland and Spain) the paces of growth were negative. Despite the large increase in production in Romania, it was not sufficient for a positive growth in the total production volume. Thus, in comparison with 2007, the total EU plywood output decreased by 308 thousand cubic meters.

The largest drop in absolute terms occurred in Finland (a decrease of 260 thousand cubic meters). The lowest annual growth rates were recorded in Spain (-5.6%), where plywood production reduced by almost 37% over the period under review.
