Over the period under review, the market reached the peak level in 2021 and is likely to see steady growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, nutmeg, mace and cardamom production shrank to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. In general, production, however, showed a perceptible decline. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 2,486% against the previous year. As a result, production attained the peak level of $X. From 2018 to 2021, production growth remained at a lower figure.
Latvia (X tons) remains the largest nutmeg, mace and cardamom producing country in the European Union, comprising approx. 100% of total volume.

Exports in the EU
In 2021, shipments abroad of nutmeg, mace and cardamoms increased by 6.2% to X tons, rising for the second consecutive year after three years of decline. The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.5% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 19% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.
In value terms, nutmeg, mace and cardamom exports expanded markedly to $X in 2021. Total exports indicated a slight increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +1.3% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports increased by +82.4% against 2015 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 35% against the previous year. The level of export peaked in 2021 and is likely to see steady growth in the near future.
Exports by Country
The Netherlands was the main exporter of nutmeg, mace and cardamoms in the European Union, with the volume of exports recording X tons, which was near 49% of total exports in 2021. Germany (X tons) took the second position in the ranking, distantly followed by Belgium (X tons), Italy (X tons) and Spain (X tons). All these countries together took approx. 37% share of total exports. France (X tons) and Sweden (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to nutmeg, mace and cardamom exports from the Netherlands stood at +4.5%. At the same time, Belgium (+10.8%), Spain (+5.9%), Germany (+5.6%) and Sweden (+2.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Belgium emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in the European Union, with a CAGR of +10.8% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Italy (-3.9%) and France (-8.2%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. The Netherlands (+3.8 p.p.), Belgium (+3.6 p.p.) and Germany (+2.7 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while France and Italy saw its share reduced by -6.8% and -7.4% from 2012 to 2021, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, the Netherlands ($X) remains the largest nutmeg, mace and cardamom supplier in the European Union, comprising 48% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Germany ($X), with a 19% share of total exports. It was followed by Belgium, with a 5.7% share.
In the Netherlands, nutmeg, mace and cardamom exports expanded at an average annual rate of +1.9% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Germany (+5.0% per year) and Belgium (+5.3% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2021, the export price in the European Union amounted to $X per ton, growing by 5% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, recorded a pronounced setback. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when the export price increased by 13%. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was Sweden ($X per ton), while Italy ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Spain (+1.7%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Imports in the EU
For the fourth year in a row, the European Union recorded growth in supplies from abroad of nutmeg, mace and cardamoms, which increased by 10% to X tons in 2021. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.6% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when imports increased by 13% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.
In value terms, nutmeg, mace and cardamom imports expanded remarkably to $X in 2021. In general, imports showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 34% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.
Imports by Country
In 2021, the Netherlands (X tons) and Germany (X tons) were the main importers of nutmeg, mace and cardamoms in the European Union, together recording near 52% of total imports. Spain (X tons) held a 12% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by France (6.8%), Belgium (6.8%) and Italy (6.1%). The following importers - Sweden (X tons) and Austria (X tons) - each finished at a 5.2% share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the key importing countries, was attained by Spain (with a CAGR of +16.5%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the Netherlands ($X), Germany ($X) and France ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, together accounting for 62% of total imports. Belgium, Spain, Italy, Sweden and Austria lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 24%.
Sweden, with a CAGR of +4.8%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the import price in the European Union amounted to $X per ton, remaining stable against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price continues to indicate a noticeable contraction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 when the import price increased by 18%. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Sweden ($X per ton), while Spain ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Sweden (+3.8%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the import price figures.
