In 2022, overseas shipments of nitrogen decreased by X% to X cubic meters for the first time since 2014, thus ending a seven-year rising trend. Over the period under review, exports, however, showed a prominent increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when exports increased by X%. The volume of export peaked at X cubic meters in 2021, and then declined in the following year.
In value terms, nitrogen exports fell to $X in 2022. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of X% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 with an increase of X%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X, and then declined in the following year.
Exports by Country
Belgium represented the key exporting country with an export of around X cubic meters, which reached X% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Germany (X cubic meters), France (X cubic meters), Poland (X cubic meters) and the Czech Republic (X cubic meters), together creating a X% share of total exports. Italy (X cubic meters) and Sweden (X cubic meters) held a little share of total exports.
Belgium was also the fastest-growing in terms of the nitrogen exports, with a CAGR of X% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Italy (X%), Sweden (X%), Germany (X%) and France (X%) displayed positive paces of growth. Poland experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, the Czech Republic (X%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Belgium (X p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Germany, Poland, the Czech Republic and France saw its share reduced by X%, X%, X% and X% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, the largest nitrogen supplying countries in the European Union were Belgium ($X), Germany ($X) and France ($X), with a combined X% share of total exports.
Among the main exporting countries, France, with a CAGR of X%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
The export price in the European Union stood at $X per cubic meter in 2022, almost unchanged from the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, showed a deep reduction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when the export price increased by X%. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the maximum at $X per cubic meter in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was France ($X per cubic meter), while Belgium ($X per cubic meter) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by France (X%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Imports in the EU
Nitrogen imports reduced to X cubic meters in 2022, which is down by X% on 2021 figures. Over the period under review, imports saw a pronounced shrinkage. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when imports increased by X% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X cubic meters in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, nitrogen imports fell to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when imports increased by X% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X, and then dropped in the following year.
Imports by Country
In 2022, the Netherlands (X cubic meters), distantly followed by Germany (X cubic meters), Belgium (X cubic meters), Slovakia (X cubic meters) and the Czech Republic (X cubic meters) were the major importers of nitrogen, together making up X% of total imports. The following importers - Hungary (X cubic meters), France (X cubic meters), Slovenia (X cubic meters), Luxembourg (X cubic meters), Greece (X cubic meters), Denmark (X cubic meters), Poland (X cubic meters) and Austria (X cubic meters) - together made up X% of total imports.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the leading importing countries, was attained by Poland (with a CAGR of X%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the Netherlands ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported nitrogen in the European Union, comprising X% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Germany ($X), with a X% share of total imports. It was followed by Belgium, with a X% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in the Netherlands stood at X%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Germany (X% per year) and Belgium (X% per year).
Import Prices by Country
The import price in the European Union stood at $X per cubic meter in 2022, approximately reflecting the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2022, it increased at an average annual rate of X%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when the import price increased by X%. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per cubic meter. From 2019 to 2022, the import prices remained at a lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Austria ($X per cubic meter), while Slovakia ($X per cubic meter) was amongst the lowest.
