Mercury Market Size in the EU
In 2021, after six years of growth, there was decline in the EU mercury market, when its value decreased by -X% to $X. The total consumption indicated a tangible expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +X% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, consumption increased by +X% against 2014 indices. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2020, and then fell modestly in the following year.
Mercury Production in the EU
In value terms, mercury production declined to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. The total production indicated a pronounced expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value decreased at an average annual rate of -X% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, production increased by +X% against 2015 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 when the production volume increased by X% against the previous year. Over the period under review, production reached the peak level at $X in 2020, and then shrank slightly in the following year.
Production By Country in the EU
Spain (X tonnes) constituted the country with the largest volume of mercury production, accounting for X% of total volume. Moreover, mercury production in Spain exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, the Netherlands (X tonnes), threefold.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume in Spain was relatively modest.

Exports in the EU
In 2021, after four years of decline, there was significant growth in shipments abroad of mercuries, when their volume increased by X% to X tonnes. Over the period under review, exports, however, saw a dramatic downturn. The volume of export peaked at X tonnes in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, mercury exports soared to $X in 2021. In general, exports, however, saw a sharp setback. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 when exports increased by X% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Exports by Country
Italy represented the main exporter of mercuries in the European Union, with the volume of exports resulting at X tonnes, which was approx. X% of total exports in 2021. Spain (X tonnes) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a X% share, followed by Slovakia (X%). Hungary (X tonnes), the Netherlands (X tonnes) and Germany (X tonnes) followed a long way behind the leaders.
From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were in Slovakia (with a CAGR of +X%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced a decline in the exports figures.
In value terms, the largest mercury supplying countries in the European Union were the Netherlands ($X), Germany ($X) and Italy ($X), together accounting for X% of total exports. Spain, Slovakia and Hungary lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further X, with a CAGR of +X%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, among the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced a decline in the exports figures.
Export Prices by Country
The export price in the European Union stood at $X per tonne in 2021, waning by -X% against the previous year. Overall, the export price recorded a noticeable downturn. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 an increase of X%. The level of export peaked at $X per tonne in 2020, and then fell sharply in the following year.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was the Netherlands ($X per tonne), while Italy ($X per tonne) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the Netherlands (+X%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Mercury Imports
Imports in the EU
In 2021, the amount of mercuries imported in the European Union soared to X tonnes, growing by X% against the previous year's figure. In general, imports, however, showed a deep setback. The volume of import peaked at X tonnes in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, mercury imports soared to $X in 2021. Overall, imports, however, saw a abrupt curtailment. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when imports increased by X% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the i in the European Union amounted to $X per tonne, with an increase of X% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, continues to indicate a perceptible decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when the import price increased by X% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices reached the maximum at $X per tonne in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by the country of destination: the country with the highest price was Germany ($X per tonne), while the Netherlands ($X per tonne) was amongst the lowest.
