The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when exports increased by 110%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.
Exports by Country
The Netherlands was the largest exporter of laptops and palm-top computers in the European Union, with the volume of exports amounting to X units, which was near 69% of total exports in 2021. Germany (X units) took a 13% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by the Czech Republic (5.4%). The following exporters - Sweden (X units) and Italy (X units) - each resulted at a 3.3% share of total exports.
The Netherlands was also the fastest-growing in terms of the laptops and palm-top computers exports, with a CAGR of +10.6% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Germany (+2.8%) displayed positive paces of growth. The Czech Republic and Sweden experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Italy (-5.8%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. The Netherlands (+18 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Sweden, Italy, the Czech Republic and Germany saw its share reduced by -1.7%, -3.2%, -3.8% and -5.3% from 2012 to 2021, respectively.
In value terms, the Netherlands ($X) remains the largest laptop and tablet computer supplier in the European Union, comprising 51% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Germany ($X), with a 19% share of total exports. It was followed by the Czech Republic, with a 13% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in the Netherlands stood at +15.8%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Germany (+6.7% per year) and the Czech Republic (+5.0% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2021, the export price in the European Union amounted to $X per unit, growing by 8.6% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2021, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.1%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 an increase of 16% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs at $X per unit in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the Czech Republic ($X per unit), while the Netherlands ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the Netherlands (+4.7%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2021, overseas purchases of laptops and palm-top computers increased by 16% to X units, rising for the third consecutive year after four years of decline. Overall, imports recorded a strong expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when imports increased by 79% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.
In value terms, laptop and tablet computer imports surged to $X in 2021. In general, imports continue to indicate prominent growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 with an increase of 60%. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.
Imports by Country
The Netherlands represented the largest importer of laptops and palm-top computers in the European Union, with the volume of imports reaching X units, which was near 47% of total imports in 2021. Germany (X units) ranks second in terms of the total imports with a 15% share, followed by France (7.6%). The following importers - Belgium (X units), Italy (X units), the Czech Republic (X units), Spain (X units), Poland (X units), Sweden (X units) and Denmark (X units) - together made up 22% of total imports.
The Netherlands was also the fastest-growing in terms of the laptops and palm-top computers imports, with a CAGR of +14.8% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Belgium (+9.6%), Denmark (+4.6%), Germany (+4.2%), France (+3.2%), the Czech Republic (+2.9%) and Spain (+1.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Poland experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Italy (-2.0%) and Sweden (-2.2%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of the Netherlands (+22 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2021, the share of the Czech Republic (-1.6 p.p.), Poland (-1.8 p.p.), Spain (-2.4 p.p.), Sweden (-2.5 p.p.), France (-2.9 p.p.), Germany (-4.1 p.p.) and Italy (-4.8 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, the largest laptop and tablet computer importing markets in the European Union were the Netherlands ($X), Germany ($X) and France ($X), together accounting for 62% of total imports.
The Netherlands, with a CAGR of +12.0%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
The import price in the European Union stood at $X per unit in 2021, with an increase of 4.8% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 an increase of 14% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X per unit in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the Czech Republic ($X per unit), while the Netherlands ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
