Exports in the EU

In 2022, overseas shipments of knotted carpets and other knotted textile floor coverings increased by 2.6% to X square meters, rising for the sixth year in a row after three years of decline. The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.6% from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when exports increased by 19% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.

In value terms, knotted carpet exports stood at $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The level of export peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

In 2022, Italy (X square meters), France (X square meters), Germany (X square meters), the Czech Republic (X square meters) and Belgium (X square meters) was the main exporter of knotted carpets and other knotted textile floor coverings in the European Union, making up 66% of total export. Sweden (X square meters) held a 6% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Spain (5.9%) and Denmark (4.8%). Poland (X square meters) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for France (with a CAGR of +16.4%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest knotted carpet supplying countries in the European Union were Italy ($X), Germany ($X) and Sweden ($X), with a combined 60% share of total exports.

In terms of the main exporting countries, Sweden, with a CAGR of +11.1%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, the export price in the European Union amounted to $X per square meter, rising by 11% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, recorded a noticeable decline. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when the export price increased by 16% against the previous year. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per square meter. From 2015 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Germany ($X per square meter), while Belgium ($X per square meter) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Spain (+3.6%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, approx. X square meters of knotted carpets and other knotted textile floor coverings were imported in the European Union; rising by 3.7% compared with 2021. Over the period under review, imports showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 42%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs in 2022 and are likely to see gradual growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, knotted carpet imports shrank modestly to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, continue to indicate a noticeable descent. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when imports increased by 26%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

Germany (X square meters) and Italy (X square meters) represented roughly 36% of total imports in 2022. Spain (X square meters) held an 8% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by the Netherlands (7.7%), France (6.2%), Sweden (6.2%), Portugal (6%) and Austria (4.6%). Denmark (X square meters), Ireland (X square meters), the Czech Republic (X square meters), Belgium (X square meters) and Greece (X square meters) held a minor share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the key importing countries, was attained by Ireland (with a CAGR of +6.7%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Germany ($X), Italy ($X) and France ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, together accounting for 57% of total imports.

Italy, with a CAGR of +1.2%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in the European Union stood at $X per square meter in 2022, shrinking by -3.9% against the previous year. Overall, the import price showed a abrupt slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when the import price increased by 3%. Over the period under review, import prices attained the peak figure at $X per square meter in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
