In 2021, exports of electric locomotives in the European Union amounted to X units, with an increase of 12% on the year before. Over the period under review, exports showed a perceptible increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 193%. The volume of export peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.
In value terms, electric locomotive exports soared to $X in 2021. Total exports indicated a pronounced increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +2.7% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports increased by +7.0% against 2018 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 127%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum in 2021 and are likely to see steady growth in years to come.
Exports by Country
In 2021, Germany (X units) represented the main exporter of electric locomotives, committing 74% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Spain (X units) and France (X units), together mixing up an 18% share of total exports. Sweden (X units) took a little share of total exports.
Exports from Germany increased at an average annual rate of +5.0% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Sweden (+31.5%), Spain (+17.6%) and France (+14.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Sweden emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in the European Union, with a CAGR of +31.5% from 2012-2021. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Spain, Germany, France and Sweden increased by +7.4, +6.9, +3.9 and +2.8 percentage points, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Germany ($X) remains the largest electric locomotive supplier in the European Union, comprising 65% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Spain ($X), with a 17% share of total exports. It was followed by France, with a 7.1% share.
In Germany, electric locomotive exports expanded at an average annual rate of +1.3% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Spain (+21.8% per year) and France (+21.4% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2021, the export price in the European Union amounted to $X per unit, growing by 5% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, recorded a mild reduction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 an increase of 74% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per unit in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was Spain ($X per unit), while Sweden ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by France (+6.4%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

In 2021, imports of electric locomotives in the European Union surged to X units, rising by 165% on the year before. Over the period under review, imports, however, faced a deep slump. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at X units in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, electric locomotive imports soared to $X in 2021. Overall, imports, however, saw a noticeable curtailment. The level of import peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.
Imports by Country
In 2021, Italy (X units), distantly followed by Germany (X units), Poland (X units), Denmark (X units), Ireland (X units), Finland (X units) and Croatia (X units) represented the major importers of electric locomotives, together mixing up 90% of total imports.
From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were in Ireland (with a CAGR of +152.9%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest electric locomotive importing markets in the European Union were Ireland ($X), Denmark ($X) and Germany ($X), with a combined 40% share of total imports.
Among the main importing countries, Ireland, with a CAGR of +166.9%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
The import price in the European Union stood at $X per unit in 2021, with a decrease of -9.2% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, recorded a buoyant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when the import price increased by 118% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs at $X per unit in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably country of destination: the country with the highest price was Ireland ($X per unit), while Croatia ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
