Powdered Milk Production in the EU
In value terms, powdered milk production reduced to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. The total production indicated moderate growth from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +3.6% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, production increased by +35.8% against 2016 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when the production volume increased by 28% against the previous year. Over the period under review, production attained the maximum level at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, production failed to regain momentum.
The countries with the highest volumes of production in 2021 were France (X tons), Germany (X tons) and the Netherlands (X tons), with a combined 60% share of total production. Poland, Belgium, Ireland and Denmark lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 26%.
From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were in Ireland (with a CAGR of +8.6%), while production for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Exports in the EU
In 2021, overseas shipments of powdered milk decreased by -3.5% to X tons, falling for the second year in a row after three years of growth. The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.2% from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern remained consistent, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being observed throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 with an increase of 19%. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, powdered milk exports expanded sharply to $X in 2021. Total exports indicated a perceptible expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +2.0% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports increased by +54.9% against 2016 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when exports increased by 23%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Exports by Country
The shipments of the five major exporters of powdered milk, namely Germany, France, the Netherlands, Belgium and Ireland, represented more than two-thirds of total export. It was distantly followed by Poland (X tons), achieving a 6.5% share of total exports. Sweden (X tons) took a minor share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were in Ireland (with a CAGR of +10.9%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest powdered milk supplying countries in the European Union were Germany ($X), France ($X) and the Netherlands ($X), with a combined 55% share of total exports. These countries were followed by Belgium, Ireland, Poland and Sweden, which together accounted for a further 32%.
Ireland, with a CAGR of +10.8%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, in terms of the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
The export price in the European Union stood at $X per ton in 2021, increasing by 11% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when the export price increased by 26%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2014 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, major exporting countries recorded the following prices: in the Netherlands ($X per ton) and France ($X per ton), while Belgium ($X per ton) and Poland ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Poland (+0.1%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in the EU
In 2021, approx. X tons of powdered milk were imported in the European Union; growing by 3.3% against the previous year's figure. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.1% over the period from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern remained consistent, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when imports increased by 8.4%. The volume of import peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.
In value terms, powdered milk imports rose rapidly to $X in 2021. Total imports indicated a temperate expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +2.1% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +56.1% against 2016 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when imports increased by 19% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2014; afterwards, it flattened through to 2021.
Imports by Country
The purchases of the seven major importers of powdered milk, namely the Netherlands, Belgium, Italy, Germany, Poland, France and Spain, represented more than two-thirds of total import. The following importers - Ireland (X tons) and Bulgaria (X tons) - each resulted at a 4.4% share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were in Poland (with a CAGR of +12.5%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest powdered milk importing markets in the European Union were the Netherlands ($X), Belgium ($X) and Italy ($X), with a combined 49% share of total imports. These countries were followed by Germany, France, Poland, Spain, Ireland and Bulgaria, which together accounted for a further 38%.
In terms of the main importing countries, Poland, with a CAGR of +11.4%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
The import price in the European Union stood at $X per ton in 2021, surging by 10% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 an increase of 21%. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2014 to 2021, the import prices remained at a lower figure.
