Biodiesel Exports

Exports in the EU

After seven years of growth, overseas shipments of biodiesel decreased by X% to X tons in 2023. Overall, exports, however, continue to indicate a remarkable increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when exports increased by X% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at X tons in 2022, and then reduced in the following year.

In value terms, biodiesel exports declined remarkably to $X in 2023. Over the period under review, exports, however, posted buoyant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when exports increased by X% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2022, and then shrank rapidly in the following year.

Exports by Country

The Netherlands represented the key exporter of biodiesel in the European Union, with the volume of exports recording X tons, which was approx. X% of total exports in 2023. Belgium (X tons) held the second position in the ranking, followed by Germany (X tons) and Spain (X tons). All these countries together held approx. X% share of total exports. The following exporters - Italy (X tons), Bulgaria (X tons) and France (X tons) - together made up X% of total exports.

From 2012 to 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main exporting countries, was attained by Bulgaria (with a CAGR of X%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest biodiesel supplying countries in the European Union were the Netherlands ($X), Belgium ($X) and Germany ($X), with a combined X% share of total exports. Spain, Italy, Bulgaria and France lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further X%.

Bulgaria, with a CAGR of X%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, in terms of the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

In 2023, the export price in the European Union amounted to $X per ton, falling by X% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when the export price increased by X%. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the maximum at $X per ton in 2022, and then contracted sharply in the following year.

Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major exporting countries. In 2023, major exporting countries recorded the following prices: in Italy ($X per ton) and Spain ($X per ton), while France ($X per ton) and Belgium ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.

Imports in the EU

In 2023, purchases abroad of biodiesel decreased by X% to X tons for the first time since 2013, thus ending a nine-year rising trend. In general, imports, however, recorded a strong expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when imports increased by X%. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2022, and then fell significantly in the following year.

In value terms, biodiesel imports dropped significantly to $X in 2023. Over the period under review, imports, however, continue to indicate a strong increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when imports increased by X% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X in 2022, and then fell significantly in the following year.

Imports by Country

In 2023, the Netherlands (X tons) and Belgium (X tons) were the key importers of biodiesel in the European Union, together mixing up X% of total imports.
