Moreover, Greece emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in the European Union, with a CAGR of +26.5% from 2012-2021. Portugal experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Italy (-5.1%), Denmark (-12.4%), Germany (-13.9%), France (-14.7%), Spain (-16.4%), the Netherlands (-16.4%) and Belgium (-17.5%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Romania (+31 p.p.), Greece (+10 p.p.) and Portugal (+2.1 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Belgium, the Netherlands, Spain, France and Germany saw its share reduced by -4%, -4.8%, -8.2%, -9.7% and -10.4% from 2012 to 2021, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, France ($X), Germany ($X) and Spain ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, together comprising 50% of total imports. The Netherlands, Belgium, Italy, Romania, Denmark, Greece and Portugal lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 28%.
Among the main importing countries, Romania, with a CAGR of +25.9%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
The import price in the European Union stood at $X per ton in 2021, rising by 35% against the previous year. In general, the import price showed prominent growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when the import price increased by 170% against the previous year. The level of import peaked in 2021 and is likely to continue growth in the near future.
