Canned Vegetable Market Size in Egypt

The Egyptian canned vegetable market expanded notably to $X in 2022, with an increase of 6.5% against the previous year. In general, consumption, however, saw a pronounced decrease. Over the period under review, the market reached the peak level at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

For the fourth year in a row, Egypt recorded decline in overseas shipments of canned vegetables, which decreased by -1.6% to X tons in 2022. In general, exports, however, enjoyed a resilient expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 97%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons. From 2017 to 2022, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, canned vegetable exports rose to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, total exports indicated a remarkable increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +9.7% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +34.9% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 42%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

Libya (X tons), Jordan (X tons) and Brazil (X tons) were the main destinations of canned vegetable exports from Egypt, together comprising 53% of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Brazil (with a CAGR of +90.7%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest markets for canned vegetable exported from Egypt were Libya ($X), Jordan ($X) and Palestine ($X), with a combined 54% share of total exports. Brazil, Spain, Iraq, the United States, Greece, Italy, Sudan, Algeria, the United Arab Emirates and Israel lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 33%.

Among the main countries of destination, Brazil, with a CAGR of +88.8%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The average canned vegetable export price stood at $X per ton in 2022, with an increase of 3.8% against the previous year. In general, the export price enjoyed a modest increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 an increase of 38%. The export price peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Palestine ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to the United Arab Emirates ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Jordan (+1.9%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Egypt

In 2022, the amount of canned vegetables imported into Egypt reduced remarkably to X tons, shrinking by -32.9% against 2021. Over the period under review, imports showed a deep setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when imports increased by 79%. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at X tons in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, canned vegetable imports declined rapidly to $X in 2022. Overall, imports showed a deep slump. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 when imports increased by 48% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2016 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Italy (X tons), China (X tons) and Thailand (X tons) were the main suppliers of canned vegetable imports to Egypt, together comprising 59% of total imports. Syrian Arab Republic, Greece, Bulgaria, France, Germany, the Netherlands, the United Arab Emirates, the United States, Lebanon and Belgium lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 30%.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by Bulgaria (with a CAGR of +15.9%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Bulgaria, with a CAGR of +21.4%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, in terms of the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The average canned vegetable import price stood at $X per ton in 2022, dropping by -6.2% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, posted buoyant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when the average import price increased by 26% against the previous year. Over the period under review, average import prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2021, and then reduced in the following year.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the Netherlands ($X per ton), while the price for Italy ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the United Arab Emirates (+8.8%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
