Bicycle Market Size in Egypt

The Egyptian bicycle market declined to $X in 2021, dropping by -3.1% against the previous year. In general, the total consumption indicated a measured increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.7% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, consumption increased by +19.8% against 2019 indices. Bicycle Exports

Exports from Egypt

In 2021, the amount of bicycles and other cycles exported from Egypt contracted rapidly to X units, shrinking by -90.8% on 2020. In general, exports showed a sharp decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 691% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at X units in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, bicycle exports fell sharply to $X in 2021. Overall, exports faced a dramatic downturn. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 when exports increased by 1,456%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

Ethiopia (X units), the United Arab Emirates (X units) and Kenya (X units) were the main destinations of bicycle exports from Egypt, with a combined 75% share of total exports. Saudi Arabia, Angola and France lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 25%.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Angola (with a CAGR of 0.0%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Ethiopia ($X), the United Arab Emirates ($X) and Kenya ($X) appeared to be the largest markets for bicycle exported from Egypt worldwide, with a combined 68% share of total exports.

Among the main countries of destination, Kenya, with a CAGR of +28.5%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced mixed trend patterns.

The average bicycle export price stood at $X per unit in 2021, surging by 5.5% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price enjoyed modest growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when the average export price increased by 123% against the previous year. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per unit. From 2019 to 2021, the average export prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Angola ($X per unit), while the average price for exports to Saudi Arabia ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Sudan (+9.4%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2021, approx. X units of bicycles and other cycles were imported into Egypt; with a decrease of -51.5% on 2020. Overall, imports continue to indicate a sharp descent. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when imports increased by 282% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X units in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, bicycle imports shrank dramatically to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports showed a significant contraction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 392% against the previous year. Imports peaked at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

In 2021, China (X units) constituted the largest supplier of bicycle to Egypt, accounting for a 86% share of total imports. Moreover, bicycle imports from China exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, the United Arab Emirates (X units), more than tenfold. Turkey (X units) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 2.6% share.

From 2014 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume from China amounted to -35.5%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: the United Arab Emirates (-27.5% per year) and Turkey (-8.7% per year).

In value terms, China ($X) constituted the largest supplier of bicycles and other cycles to Egypt, comprising 75% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Portugal ($X), with a 9% share of total imports. It was followed by Turkey, with a 7.8% share.

From 2014 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value from China totaled -30.3%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Portugal (+41.5% per year) and Turkey (+7.3% per year).

The average bicycle import price stood at $X per unit in 2021, surging by 42% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price continues to indicate a prominent increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when the average import price increased by 46%. The import price peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.
