The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when the market value increased by 8.5%. The level of consumption peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.
Fruit Production in ECOWAS
In value terms, fruit production totaled $X in 2022 estimated in export price. The total output value increased at an average annual rate of +2.3% from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 when the production volume increased by 13%. Over the period under review, production hit record highs at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, production failed to regain momentum.
The countries with the highest volumes of production in 2022 were Nigeria (X tons), Ghana (X tons) and Cote d'Ivoire (X tons), together comprising 70% of total production. Mali, Senegal, Guinea and Burkina Faso lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 23%.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of production, amongst the key producing countries, was attained by Senegal (with a CAGR of +16.3%), while production for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In 2022, the average fruit yield in ECOWAS was estimated at X tons per ha, almost unchanged from 2021. Overall, the yield continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 2.8%. Over the period under review, the fruit yield attained the maximum level at X tons per ha in 2019; afterwards, it flattened through to 2022. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.
In 2022, the total area harvested in terms of fruits production in ECOWAS shrank slightly to X ha, almost unchanged from 2021. The harvested area increased at an average annual rate of +1.8% over the period from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained consistent, with only minor fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 3.5% against the previous year. The level of harvested area peaked at X ha in 2021, and then reduced in the following year.
Fruit Exports
Exports in ECOWAS
In 2022, approx. X tons of fruits were exported in ECOWAS; which is down by -9% compared with 2021 figures. Overall, exports, however, recorded modest growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 when exports increased by 62%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons. From 2020 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, fruit exports shrank to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, saw buoyant growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 when exports increased by 59% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at $X in 2021, and then reduced in the following year.
Exports by Country
Cote d'Ivoire represented the major exporting country with an export of about X tons, which amounted to 75% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Ghana (X tons) and Senegal (X tons), together generating a 21% share of total exports. Mali (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to fruit exports from Cote d'Ivoire stood at +1.3%. At the same time, Mali (+14.0%), Senegal (+8.2%) and Ghana (+2.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Mali emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in ECOWAS, with a CAGR of +14.0% from 2012-2022. Senegal (+2.5 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Cote d'Ivoire saw its share reduced by -4.5% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Cote d'Ivoire ($X) remains the largest fruit supplier in ECOWAS, comprising 66% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Ghana ($X), with a 23% share of total exports. It was followed by Senegal, with a 4.8% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in Cote d'Ivoire amounted to +4.8%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Ghana (+6.5% per year) and Senegal (+7.9% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The export price in ECOWAS stood at $X per ton in 2022, shrinking by -2.5% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2022, it increased at an average annual rate of +3.6%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 an increase of 27%. Over the period under review, the export prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2021, and then fell slightly in the following year.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Ghana ($X per ton), while Senegal ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

Imports in ECOWAS
For the sixth consecutive year, ECOWAS recorded growth in purchases abroad of fruits, which increased by 24% to X tons in 2022. Overall, imports posted a resilient increase. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
In value terms, fruit imports rose sharply to $X in 2022. In general, imports recorded a prominent increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 26%. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.
Imports by Country
Nigeria (X tons) and Senegal (X tons) were the major importers of fruits in 2022, amounting to near 37% and 27% of total imports, respectively. It was distantly followed by Burkina Faso (X tons), Ghana (X tons) and Cote d'Ivoire (X tons), together comprising a 23% share of total imports. Cabo Verde (X tons) and Mali (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Nigeria (with a CAGR of +27.0%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest fruit importing markets in ECOWAS were Nigeria ($X), Senegal ($X) and Cote d'Ivoire ($X), with a combined 73% share of total imports.
In terms of the main importing countries, Nigeria, with a CAGR of +20.2%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the import price in ECOWAS amounted to $X per ton, reducing by -13.9% against the previous year. Overall, the import price continues to indicate a perceptible shrinkage. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 an increase of 18% against the previous year. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2015 to 2022, the import prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Cabo Verde ($X per ton), while Burkina Faso ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Cabo Verde (+0.4%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the import price figures.
