In 2022, shipments abroad of cheese increased by X% to X tons for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year declining trend. In general, exports continue to indicate a prominent increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of X% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, cheese exports surged to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports enjoyed buoyant growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 when exports increased by X%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2014 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

In 2022, Senegal (X tons) represented the key exporter of cheese, comprising X% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Cote d'Ivoire (X tons), Mali (X tons) and Benin (X tons), together comprising a X% share of total exports. Sierra Leone (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to cheese exports from Senegal stood at X%. At the same time, Benin (X%), Cote d'Ivoire (X%), Mali (X%) and Sierra Leone (X%) displayed positive paces of growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when imports increased by X% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked in 2022 and is likely to see steady growth in years to come.
In value terms, cheese imports declined to $X in 2022. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of X% from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of X%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2021, and then declined in the following year.
Imports by Country
Senegal was the largest importer of cheese in ECOWAS, with the volume of imports finishing at X tons, which was approx. X% of total imports in 2022. Cote d'Ivoire (X tons) took a X% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Ghana (X%), Nigeria (X%), Cabo Verde (X%) and Mali (X%). Moreover, Guinea emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in ECOWAS, with a CAGR of X% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Togo (X%) and Sierra Leone (X%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Ghana (X p.p.) and Guinea (X p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2022, the share of Togo (X p.p.) and Sierra Leone (X p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

Cabo Verde, Nigeria, Mali, Guinea, Sierra Leone, Benin, Liberia, Togo, Burkina Faso and Niger lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further X%.
Mali, with a CAGR of X%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, the import price in ECOWAS amounted to $X per ton, dropping by X% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern.
