In 2022, the East European tall oil market was finally on the rise to reach $X for the first time since 2018, thus ending a three-year declining trend. In general, consumption, however, saw a slight slump. Over the period under review, the market attained the maximum level at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, consumption remained at a lower figure.

Tall Oil Exports

Exports in Eastern Europe

In 2022, overseas shipments of tall oil decreased by X% to X tons, falling for the second year in a row after five years of growth. In general, exports, however, continue to indicate a prominent expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of X% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at X tons in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, tall oil exports fell notably to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, posted a prominent expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of X% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X in 2021, and then fell rapidly in the following year.

Exports by Country

Russia represented the key exporting country with an export of around X tons, which finished at X% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Poland (X tons) and Belarus (X tons), together constituting a X% share of total exports. Estonia (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Exports from Russia increased at an average annual rate of X% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Poland (X%) and Belarus (X%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Poland emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Eastern Europe, with a CAGR of X% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Estonia (X%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Poland (X p.p.) and Belarus (X p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Estonia and Russia saw its share reduced by X% and X% from 2012 to 2022, respectively.

In value terms, Russia ($X), Poland ($X) and Belarus ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2022, together comprising X% of total exports.

Belarus, with a CAGR of X%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, among the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in Eastern Europe amounted to $X per ton, with an increase of X% against the previous year. Export price indicated a mild expansion from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of X% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, tall oil export price increased by X% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when the export price increased by X%. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2014 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Poland ($X per ton), while Russia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

In 2022, after three years of growth, there was significant decline in purchases abroad of tall oil, when their volume decreased by X% to X tons. In general, imports continue to indicate a abrupt contraction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of X% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2021, and then fell markedly in the following year.

In value terms, tall oil imports fell dramatically to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports saw a pronounced shrinkage. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when imports increased by X%. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at $X in 2021, and then reduced dramatically in the following year.

Imports by Country

In 2022, Belarus (X tons) represented the largest importer of tall oil, generating X% of total imports. Russia (X tons) took the second position in the ranking, distantly followed by Poland (X tons). All these countries together held approx. X% share of total imports. Lithuania (X tons), Ukraine (X tons), Romania (X tons) and the Czech Republic (X tons) took a little share of total imports.
