In 2022, the East European octyl alcohol market increased by 1.2% to $X, rising for the second year in a row after two years of decline. The market value increased at an average annual rate of +3.9% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. Over the period under review, the market hit record highs at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports in Eastern Europe

Octyl alcohol exports contracted significantly to X tons in 2022, shrinking by -66% compared with the year before. Overall, exports showed a sharp decrease. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when exports increased by 270% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, octyl alcohol exports shrank significantly to $X in 2022. In general, exports faced a significant curtailment. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when exports increased by 577%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

Romania (X tons) and Russia (X tons) represented roughly 87% of total exports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Poland (X tons), creating an 11% share of total exports. The Czech Republic (X tons) took a little share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for the Czech Republic (with a CAGR of +84.4%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced a decline in the exports figures.

In value terms, Romania ($X) remains the largest octyl alcohol supplier in Eastern Europe, comprising 65% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Russia ($X), with an 18% share of total exports. It was followed by Poland, with a 14% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Romania amounted to -3.6%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Russia (-27.2% per year) and Poland (-33.1% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in Eastern Europe amounted to $X per ton, waning by -9.8% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when the export price increased by 83% against the previous year. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton, and then declined in the following year.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the Czech Republic ($X per ton), while Russia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Poland (+2.7%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Imports in Eastern Europe

In 2022, approx. X tons of octanol (octyl alcohol) and isomers thereof were imported in Eastern Europe; falling by -24.7% compared with the year before. Over the period under review, imports recorded a slight shrinkage. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 with an increase of 38% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons, and then declined dramatically in the following year.

In value terms, octyl alcohol imports contracted to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 with an increase of 114% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X, and then shrank in the following year.

Imports by Country

The Czech Republic represented the largest importer of octanol (octyl alcohol) and isomers thereof in Eastern Europe, with the volume of imports finishing at X tons, which was near 51% of total imports in 2022. Poland (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total imports with a 21% share, followed by Russia (17%). Belarus (X tons), Hungary (X tons) and Ukraine (X tons) took a relatively small share of total imports.

Imports into the Czech Republic decreased at an average annual rate of -3.6% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Russia (+91.2%), Hungary (+9.8%), Poland (+9.8%) and Belarus (+8.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Russia emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Eastern Europe, with a CAGR of +91.2% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Ukraine (-21.5%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Russia (+17 p.p.), Poland (+13 p.p.), Belarus (+2.4 p.p.) and Hungary (+2.3 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2022, the share of the Czech Republic (-15.6 p.p.) and Ukraine (-20.2 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, the Czech Republic ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported octanol (octyl alcohol) and isomers thereof in Eastern Europe, comprising 54% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Poland ($X), with a 21% share of total imports. It was followed by Russia, with a 16% share.

In the Czech Republic, octyl alcohol imports remained relatively stable over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Poland (+11.4% per year) and Russia (+80.7% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in Eastern Europe amounted to $X per ton, rising by 22% against the previous year. Import price indicated a modest expansion from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +1.9% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, octyl alcohol import price increased by +89.6% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 an increase of 55% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices reached the peak figure in 2022 and is likely to continue growth in years to come.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Hungary ($X per ton), while Belarus ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
