The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of +4.0% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. As a result, the exports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, natural sand exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 23% against the previous year. The level of export peaked in 2021 and is likely to see gradual growth in years to come.

In 2021, Hungary (X tons), Bulgaria (X tons), Poland (X tons) and the Czech Republic (X tons) was the main exporter of natural sands in Eastern Europe, achieving 75% of total export. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when the export price increased by 7.9%. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the maximum at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Poland ($X per ton), while Hungary ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

At the same time, Ukraine (+73.4%), Poland (+35.2%), Romania (+4.9%) and the Czech Republic (+2.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Ukraine emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Eastern Europe, with a CAGR of +73.4% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Russia (-11.5%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Slovakia (+66 p.p.), Ukraine (+5 p.p.) and Poland (+2.9 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Romania, the Czech Republic and Russia saw its share reduced by -13.5%, -15.9% and -35.1% from 2012 to 2021, respectively.

In value terms, Slovakia ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported natural sands in Eastern Europe, comprising 39% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by the Czech Republic ($X), with a 14% share of total imports. It was followed by Romania, with a 12% share.

In Slovakia, natural sand imports expanded at an average annual rate of +32.1% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: the Czech Republic (+9.0% per year) and Romania (+3.2% per year).

The import price in Eastern Europe stood at $X per ton in 2021, reducing by -65.9% against the previous year. Overall, the import price saw a abrupt descent. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 when the import price increased by 12% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
