Lactose Exports
Exports in Eastern Europe
In 2022, the amount of lactose and lactose syrup exported in Eastern Europe stood at X tons, growing by X% on 2021. In general, exports posted resilient growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of X% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at X tons in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, lactose exports expanded remarkably to $X in 2022. Overall, exports showed a resilient increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when exports increased by X%. The level of export peaked in 2022 and is likely to continue growth in years to come.
Exports by Country
Poland was the main exporting country with an export of about X tons, which finished at X% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Lithuania (X tons), Latvia (X tons) and Slovakia (X tons), together generating a X% share of total exports. Bulgaria (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
Exports from Poland increased at an average annual rate of X% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Slovakia (X%), Bulgaria (X%) and Latvia (X%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Slovakia emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Eastern Europe, with a CAGR of X% from 2012-2022. Lithuania experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. Poland (X p.p.), Slovakia (X p.p.) and Bulgaria (X p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Latvia and Lithuania saw its share reduced by X% and X% from 2012 to 2022, respectively.
In value terms, Poland ($X) remains the largest lactose supplier in Eastern Europe, comprising X% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Lithuania ($X), with a X% share of total exports. It was followed by Slovakia, with a X% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in Poland totaled X%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Lithuania (X% per year) and Slovakia (X% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The export price in Eastern Europe stood at $X per ton in 2022, increasing by X% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, showed a pronounced decrease. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when the export price increased by X% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Lithuania ($X per ton), while Latvia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Latvia (X%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.
Lactose Imports
Imports in Eastern Europe
After three years of decline, supplies from abroad of lactose and lactose syrup increased by X% to X tons in 2022. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of X% from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of X%. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, lactose imports rose sharply to $X in 2022. Total imports indicated moderate growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of X% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by X% against 2016 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when imports increased by X% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum in 2022 and are likely to continue growth in years to come.
Imports by Country
Russia (X tons) and Poland (X tons) represented the largest importers of lactose and lactose syrup in 2022, resulting at near X% and X% of total imports, respectively. Latvia (X tons) took the next position in the ranking, followed by the Czech Republic (X tons). All these countries together took near X% share of total imports. The following importers - Hungary (X tons), Ukraine (X tons), Lithuania (X tons), Romania (X tons), Estonia (X tons), Belarus (X tons) and Bulgaria (X tons) - together made up X% of total imports.

In value terms, the largest lactose importing markets in Eastern Europe were Russia ($X), Poland ($X) and the Czech Republic ($X), with a combined X% share of total imports. Hungary, Romania, Ukraine, Belarus, Bulgaria, Estonia, Lithuania and Latvia lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further X%.
Among the main importing countries, Estonia, with a CAGR of X%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the import price in Eastern Europe amounted to $X per ton, surging by X% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, recorded a mild curtailment. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 an increase of X%. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the Czech Republic ($X per ton), while Latvia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
