Horsehair Market Size in Eastern Europe

In 2021, the East European horsehair market increased by X% to $X, rising for the second consecutive year after two years of decline. Overall, consumption, however, continues to indicate a perceptible downturn. Over the period under review, the market attained the maximum level at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, consumption failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, horsehair production expanded significantly to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production, however, recorded a noticeable curtailment. Over the period under review, production hit record highs at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Russia (X tons) constituted the country with the largest volume of horsehair production, accounting for X% of total volume. Moreover, horsehair production in Russia exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, the Czech Republic (X tons), fivefold.

In Russia, horsehair production remained relatively stable over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: the Czech Republic (+X% per year) and Bulgaria (-X% per year).

Exports in Eastern Europe

In 2021, shipments abroad of horsehair decreased by -X% to X tons, falling for the fourth year in a row after two years of growth. Over the period under review, exports continue to indicate a abrupt downturn. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 when exports increased by X% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, horsehair exports surged to $X in 2021. In general, exports, however, enjoyed buoyant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when exports increased by X% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

The Czech Republic represented the key exporter of horsehair in Eastern Europe, with the volume of exports amounting to X tons, which was near X% of total exports in 2021. Russia (X tons) took the second position in the ranking, followed by Slovakia (X tons) and Lithuania (X tons). All these countries together took approx. X% share of total exports. Ukraine (X tons), Estonia (X tons) and Hungary (X tons) held a minor share of total exports.

The Czech Republic was also the fastest-growing in terms of the horsehair exports, with a CAGR of +X% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Lithuania (+X%), Estonia (+X%) and Slovakia (+X%) displayed positive paces of growth. Ukraine experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Russia (-X%) and Hungary (-X%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. The Czech Republic (+X p.p.), Slovakia (+X p.p.), Lithuania (less than X p.p.), Estonia (less than X p.p.) and Ukraine (less than X p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Hungary and Russia saw its share reduced by -X% and -X% from 2012 to 2021, respectively.

In value terms, the Czech Republic ($X) remains the largest horsehair supplier in Eastern Europe, comprising X% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Ukraine ($X), with a X% share of total exports. It was followed by Hungary, with less than X% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in the Czech Republic amounted to +X%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Ukraine (+X% per year) and Hungary (-X% per year).

In 2021, the export price in Eastern Europe amounted to $X per ton, jumping by X% against the previous year. Overall, the export price continues to indicate a resilient expansion. After three years of decline, overseas purchases of horsehair increased by less than X% to X tons in 2021. In general, imports, however, saw a deep setback. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of X%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, horsehair imports surged to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, recorded a noticeable shrinkage. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of X%. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2018 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

The purchases of the eight major importers of horsehair, namely Ukraine, Poland, Romania, Bulgaria, Slovakia, Russia, Lithuania and the Czech Republic, represented more than two-thirds of total import.
